Manuel Neuer: Bayern Munich goalkeeper signs new contract until 2025

Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has signed a new deal to stay with the Bundesliga champions until 2025.

The 37-year-old returned to the team in October after 10 months out, having broken his right leg on a skiing trip.

Neuer has won 11 league titles and is approaching 500 appearances for the German club.

"I'm happy to be staying at FC Bayern for another year. After my long injury, I'm back in full swing," Neuer said.

"It's immense fun for me to be on the pitch with this team. I'm sure that, together with the fans, we can achieve our big goals in the coming years - and obviously the 2025 Champions League final in Munich is one of them."

America is in the grip of Messi madness after he signed for Inter Miami from Paris St-Germain in the summer. Football in the country has been here before. But never quite like this.

His move to the United States was as reasoned, calculated and well planned as his departure from Barcelona to Paris was clumsy, rushed and unwelcome.

The timing could not have been better with the Copa America taking place there next year and the final set to be played in Miami at the Hard Rock Stadium on July 14. The Club World Cup is due to be held in the States in 2025, and what will be the biggest World Cup yet is coming to the USA, Canada and Mexico in 2026.

When it comes to a well-oiled machine looking to promote and grow a brand, nobody does it better than the USA. With all this marked in, plus the possibility that the country could also be hosting the next Women's World Cup in 2027, it's safe to say that if football - sorry, soccer - doesn't take off in the USA after all that, then it is difficult to imagine when it ever will.

Will the arrival into Major League Soccer of Messi, regarded by many as the greatest player in the history of the game, finally burn an indelible brand into America's sports-mad psyche and establish its place alongside team sports like American football, basketball or baseball, or will it turn out to be another false dawn?

The New York Red Bulls have offered a special offer holiday ticket promotion involving next season's home opener and the derby against rival New York City FC. But there's a catch. If the first match sees them drawn against Inter Miami, it won't count as part of the deal. Written in small print alongside the offer are the words, "If RBNY plays Inter Miami CF in the home opener, each home opener ticket will be replaced with a ticket to RBNY's 2nd home match."

The name 'Lionel Messi' doesn't feature but then it doesn't really have to. Surely no team will be including Inter Miami tickets in cheap seats deals in the new season.

No-one at club or league level was prepared for the effect Messi's signing would have on them.

Season ticket packages for next season are coming out at double what they were in 2023, which makes Inter Miami one of the most expensive tickets in the world - and this for a league not generally considered to be among the top level worldwide.

The club's Instagram account has gone from one million followers to 15 million.

If you want to catch the little magician when Inter Miami play away from home be prepared to dig deep.

For example, if you had wanted to watch Columbus Crew this year you could do so for as little as $40. Next season they will be charging a minimum of $382 for a seat in the 'nosebleed' section for the visit of Inter Miami, going up to $680.

If you happened to be in Orlando visiting Mickey Mouse and fancied catching a game, then last season you could have watched the locals for around $97. If you're in town when Leo visits Orlando City next season, be prepared to shell out more than $1,500 for a seat on the secondary market.

The atmosphere at games borders on the surreal. No-one is really watching the game other than through the participation of Messi.

If he is 50 metres from the ball everyone is still watching him. When he walks up to take a corner it is celebrated almost like a goal. It is almost like watching an event, a happening, that is occurring within another event.

What about buying a shirt then? Good luck!

Such is the frenzy for buying replica shirts that Adidas are struggling to meet demand in certain sizes. Even for next season.

And if you can find a shirt - and apparently even Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham has been finding it tricky to get some to give to people as gifts - there is logically a dearth of the numbers 1 and 0 and the letters M, E, S and I.

Pre Messi, Inter Miami had a stadium with plenty of empty seats. An extra stand was built to accommodate demand for when he arrived.

Construction has now begun on the Inter Miami CF stadium, set in a 58-acre public park, and scheduled to open in 2025.

The team's budget has gone from $60m to $300m and tickets are sold out within minutes whenever Inter Miami play - home or away.

Michelle Kaufman has been a sportswriter for around 35 years, most of which has been spent writing predominantly about soccer for the Miami Herald.

"My life was a lot quieter and less complicated before this man arrived in my life," she told me when we met up recently in Miami at a Soccerex exhibition.

"I'm spending about as much time focusing on him as I am my husband which is probably not a good thing.

"There is a Messi cult following that I have never seen before. I am doing a podcast on him and I have people watching it from Gabon, from Tangier [in Morocco]. I'm looking at the map and wondering where these countries are."

The Inter Miami press office has never had to deal with anything like it - not only the best player in the world, but also a celebrity.

So how are things going for Messi since he arrived?
Messi certainly hit the floor running.

In front of a capacity crowd of 20,000, including the likes of LeBron James, Serena Williams and Kim Kardashian watching on from luxury suites, he scored a stoppage time free-kick winner to seal a 2-1 win over Liga MX side Cruz Azul.

When he arrived the team were languishing at the bottom of the MLS table.

Less than a month after his arrival, he scored a screamer to earn a draw against Nashville in the Leagues Cup final to secure the club's first piece of silverware after a 10-9 win on penalties.

Buoyed by cup success, Messi's Miami went on a 12-match unbeaten run to force themselves into contention for a play-off place that would have been almost unthinkable when he arrived.

In the end it was a bridge too far, especially after a muscle injury caused Messi to miss six games in September and early October.

This is now a side transformed after a roller coaster of a campaign. Failure to make it into the play-offs means he can now look forward to the longest holiday break he has ever had.

He will have about a month and a half off, although that will be interspersed with games for his country. The dream for many football fans is that Messi will remain in contention for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup.

Off the pitch, things are going well, although the US media expected more appearances from him.

He did only one press conference when he arrived and sports media are used to more regular contact. That said, he has spoken more than ever, twice after a game for Apple TV, five individual interviews after the August press conference, as well as in the big presentation on his arrival.

If the media want more from him then they are going to be disappointed.

Messi, the Inter Miami captain
He now has the captain's armband, although it was not what he wanted but rather something that was thrust upon him.

And with the surging demand for anything Messi-related that can fill column inches and air time, going out in public is proving difficult. When he first arrived he was pictured visiting the supermarket. This is no longer possible because everybody knows he is in town, even those that do not follow football.

Meanwhile, he is committed to the Miami cause. He flew to Paris for the Ballon d'Or ceremony, arriving at 8am on the Monday and flying back to Miami immediately afterwards in the first minutes of the Tuesday to be back for training.

He has also joined the players' Whatsapp group, where he has shared some of his match tickets with those that need them. He even handed a penalty to his team-mate and forward Josef Martinez because he had been going through a spell without scoring.

At home, his wife Antonella is helping him settle, finding things out about Miami, such as the best places to eat and enjoy, as well as honing his look and his image off the pitch. He is more confident these days, he has found his place in the world.

They were no strangers to Miami and the Messis have got an impressive property in the area that they have rented for years.

He has been reunited with former Barca team-mates Jordi Alba and Sergi Busquets, while Luis Suarez will almost certainly also soon join them.

His time in Paris was not the happiest of his life. The fans didn't get him. But now things are different and his next club target will be to go looking for victory for Inter Miami in MLS.

The future of MLS and the importance of Messi in guaranteeing it
Despite great personalities and events like the 1994 World Cup, football has never really 'arrived' in the USA to the extent that many thought that it would.

How big is the arrival of Messi in MLS? Fernando Palomo, ESPN sports anchor and one of the most respected commentators on football, has no doubts: "It is one of the biggest revolutions in the world of sport that this country has seen in decades," he said.

But even he stops short of confirming that the Argentine superstar's arrival into MLS will prove to be the game's upward tipping point.

He said: "I live in a small town in Connecticut and people that don't talk to me about football have approached me not only to talk about football but to tell me that they have already bought the Messi jersey, which kind of tells you where it's landed and how it's impacted this game."

Palomo adds it is much bigger than when Beckham came over but that "time will tell" if it really makes football in America take off.

"At least the game is in a better place than it ever has been," he said.

Ultimately, American sports fans' emphasis on the individual rather than the team could make it difficult for the game to grow to where many believe it should in the United States.

In the meantime, let's all enjoy the ride.

F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: Max Verstappen wins season finale

Red Bull's Max Verstappen ended the most dominant season in Formula 1 history with victory in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, his 19th win in 22 races.

The comfortable victory, after brushing off a brief challenge from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc on the opening lap, gives Verstappen an 86.4% win rate in 2023.

Red Bull's Sergio Perez took second on the road after Leclerc let him by on the penultimate lap in a vain attempt to secure second in the constructors' championship for Ferrari against Mercedes, but was demoted to fourth on the road by a five-second penalty.

That promoted George Russell to third for Mercedes and, with Lewis Hamilton securing two points for ninth place, that was enough to keep Mercedes in second place by three points.

Leclerc's strategy had been to let Perez by in the hope that Mexican, on fresher tyres, could build enough of a lead to negate his penalty, imposed for a collision with McLaren's Lando Norris.

But Perez did not quite make it, and he dropped down to be classified 1.1 seconds behind Russell.

But Leclerc had said before the race that he did not care about that - and his face betrayed as much whilst he waited for the post-race interviews, his disappointment at the constructors' result plain to see.

Norris was fifth ahead of team-mate Oscar Piastri, with Alonso seventh ahead of Alpha Tauri's Yuki Tsunoda, Hamilton and the second Aston Martin of Lance Stroll.

Verstappen's incredible season
Russell said he was delighted to secure the position for Mercedes. "It means a lot to everyone back at the factory after a difficult season," he said. "I am really happy to sure second."

Leclerc said: "Checo had a five-second penalty so we had to help him to finish in front of George, so I tried to give him the DRS and slipstream but unfortunately it was not enough."

He said he was happy Ferrari had been the second fastest car in Abu Dhabi, disappointed to lose out on second in the championship but proud of the team for recovering strongly after they started the season with a difficult car.

Verstappen said: "An incredible season. I was a little emotional on the in-lap - it is the last time I am sitting in the car which has given me a lot.

"I am proud to win the last race. It was an incredible year. It will be hard to do something similar again.

"We are working hard again to have a very competitive car. The other teams will be trying to beat us but we are ready for the challenge."

It had been known since Brazil two races ago that Verstappen would finish the season with a better win percentage than the previous record of 75% set by Alberto Ascari in 1952. But to beat that by more than 10% underlines the scale of his achievement this year.

How the race unfolded
Verstappen's victory was never in doubt - and surely would not have been even had Leclerc managed to get ahead of the Red Bull on a feisty opening lap.

The Ferrari driver challenged into the first corner after making a better start than Verstappen, before backing out of a move, and again into Turns Six and Seven, where again the world champion fended him off.

Leclerc then settled into securing second place, knowing he faced a fight with the McLarens and Russell.

Lando Norris passed Russell at the start to run in fourth behind Verstappen, Leclerc and the other McLaren of Oscar Piastri in the early laps.

But Norris and Russell soon passed Piastri and then made their first pit stops on lap 14, when a slow stop for Norris vaulted Russell ahead.

Once in front, the Mercedes was faster, and the top four positions looked locked in until Perez's recovery drive came into focus.

The Mexican had started ninth after losing his fastest qualifying lap to a track limits infringement but Red Bull used two long first stints, stopping later than their rivals at both stops to give him a tyre advantage in the final stint.

Perez rejoined behind Leclerc, Russell and Norris, but hauled them all in over the final 10 laps or so.

His penalty came as a result of an incident on lap 47, 11 laps from the end, when he tried to pass Norris at the end of the first long straight.

Norris gave him room but Perez ran deep into the corner and the two cars collided.

Norris complained over the radio that Perez had driven into him, and the stewards deemed that Perez had caused a collision and awarded the penalty on which ultimately rested the destiny of $10m of prize money.

After the race, the McLaren driver said: "I tried to let him past. I was like four car lengths away from the apex, and somehow he still crashed into me. Impressive."

McLaren were disappointed not to achieve their pre-race aim of a podium, with Piastri starting third and Norris fifth, but their car simply did not have the pace to compete with the Ferrari and Mercedes in front.

Their consolation was that the result was more than enough to secure them fourth in the constructors' championship ahead of Aston Martin.

Tsunoda drove a strong race on a one-stop strategy in the upgraded Alpha Tauri and even had a period in the lead as the front-running cars made their first pit stops.

But as his tyres wore in the closing laps, he was powerless to hold off Alonso's charge, although he did manage to stay just over a second ahead of Hamilton, who was slightly hampered by front wing damage caused by running into the back of Pierre Gasly's Alpine early in the race.

The prosecutor has also asked for Alves to receive a restraining order following the jail term and for him to pay damages worth 150,000 euros (£130,500) to the woman.

In August, a court in the Barcelona area formally indicted Alves and later decided there was enough evidence to send him to trial.

A trial date is yet to be set for Alves, who played for Brazil at last year's World Cup and had his contract with Mexican club UNAM terminated after his arrest.

In Spain, a claim of rape is investigated under the general accusation of sexual assault and convictions can lead to prison sentences of between four and 15 years.

Yet Soo's story, one of adversity, celebrity and then obscurity, is significant. And slowly being recognised once more.

Short presentational grey line
Three years earlier - on 9 May 1942 - a 28-year-old Soo played his first game for England, also against Wales, in front of 30,000 people at Cardiff's Ninian Park.

It was a historic debut. Soo became the first non-white man to play for England. He was already the first Chinese player in the English Football League. And he remains the only player of Asian descent to represent England at senior level.

In the 1930s Soo was a star. A household name who appeared on cigarette cards and featured in newspapers, he was described as a talented half-back, clever, quick with an eye for an incisive pass and able to play in any position.

England team-mate Stan Mortensen summed up Soo's style. "Everything he did was hall-marked," wrote Mortensen in his book Football is My Game. "He seemed incapable of a clumsy movement."

But Soo's fame faded in the following decades. To the vast majority of fans, his name is unknown.

Soo was born in 1914 in Buxton, Derbyshire, a few months before the start of the First World War.

His mother Beatrice was English and his father Quan was Chinese. They met in the Manchester area and, at the time of their marriage, were registered as living at the same address.

In the 1911 census there were only 1,319 China-born citizens residing in England and Wales in a population of about 35 million. The main source of income for many Chinese immigrants, including Quan, was running steam laundries, a quintessential working-class job for many settlers.

Laundry work was traditionally performed by women, so the Chinese community faced less hostility because they were seen as taking women's jobs rather than men's.

Even so, Chinese workers were caught in an impossible situation. If they did work, they were accused of stealing local jobs. If they did not, they were deemed idle.

Women who married immigrants automatically lost their British nationality and became foreigners.

The hostility they faced would occasionally turn into social unrest. The first Chinese laundry in London was stoned soon after it opened in 1901. During the 1911 Cardiff riots all 30 Chinese laundries in the city were targeted.

Quan and Beatrice moved to Buxton and, after spells in different areas, had settled in West Derby in Liverpool by 1920, running a popular laundry on Town Row.

Soo's footballing abilities were clear from a young age and he joined Prescot Cables as an 18-year-old in 1932. Although he was scouted by Liverpool and Everton, Stoke City declared their interest and manager Tom Mather signed him for £400 in 1933.

Promoted to the top flight in Soo's first season, Stoke were a thrilling and elegant side, with Soo dovetailing with the legendary Matthews.

By 1938, a 24-year-old Soo was Stoke captain, and the demands of fans and journalists for him to be called up by England were increasing.

The outbreak of war delayed his promotion to the international stage before he made his debut in 1942.

Soo played 260 matches for Stoke between 1933 and 1945, including wartime friendlies and cup games, scoring 20 goals in the process.

He also became a national icon. His wedding with his first wife, Beryl Lunt, made headlines in the Staffordshire Sentinel in 1938 after attracting a crowd of 2,000 of well-wishers despite attempts to keep the ceremony a secret.

The article also revealed that the honeymoon would be spent in Bournemouth. The media rarely published details about footballers' personal lives, but Soo's stardom caused this excitement.

His Chinese heritage was part of the intrigue.

"It was regarded as a novelty," said Susan Gardiner, author of The Wanderer: The Story of Frank Soo.

"They were intrigued by the fact that this very young, talented Chinese player had joined Stoke City... rather than [being] hostile towards him."

Nevertheless, Soo had to deal with regular references to his race and his name being used in disrespectful pun-filled headlines.

Ronnie Soo, Frank's nephew, said in the documentary Frank Soo: The Forgotten Legend that there were "cartoons of him as a Chinese character with a football at his feet".

Generally, Soo received positive coverage and, seen grinning in photographs of the time, it is easy to understand why he was referred to as 'The Smiler'.

Soo served in the Royal Air Force in World War Two but continued to play club football after the Football Association suspended the Football League and organised regional Wartime Leagues. He also captained the Royal Air Force and Forces XI.

Soo played nine games for England, including a 3-2 win over Scotland in front of 133,000 fans at Hampden Park in 1944.

However, because he only played during the war and games were deemed unofficial by the FA, those appearances were never recognised with caps.

The usual club competitions were suspended at the outbreak of war and the practicalities of conflict affected international games.

"Players in the services or civilian work could only play if it did not interfere with their military service or war work," said Dr Alexander Jackson, curator at the National Football Museum and author of Football's Great War.

"While the FA encouraged good relations with the armed forces and the release of service players for international games, due to their value in raising morale and raising funds for charity, it could not compel the forces to release a player.

"The deployment of military personal abroad, and the loss of players through military service, meant that the FA was restricted in who it could select.

"The war would have placed obstacles in the way of FA selectors observing players and recommending them for international honours in the same way as in peacetime."

Soo was 25 when war broke out, the peak of many playing careers. By the time the war was over, he was 31.

He still came close to making his England career official. Called up for another peacetime England international in 1946, Soo pulled out with an ankle injury and was replaced by bright young star Billy Wright.

Wright, a future England captain, won his first official cap against Ireland eight months later, supplanting Soo in the team and ensuring his international career would never be officially recognised.

After short spells playing for Leicester City, Luton Town and Chelmsford City, Soo moved into management.

It took him abroad in 1952 and his memory faded from English football.

His reputation was reinforced overseas as he led Norway to the 1952 Olympics and won the Swedish top flight with Djurgardens IF in 1955.

Following his final recorded managerial role with Danish side Akademisk Boldklub in 1965-66, very little is known about Soo. It is suggested that he moved back to north-west England in the mid-1970s before settling in Stoke.

Fans recall seeing him at local matches, showing them cigarette cards from his glory days.

"When he was back in England, he was suffering from what's now known as Alzheimer's," said Ronnie. "He was in care but in later years he did deteriorate."

Soo died of dementia on 25 January 1991 in Staffordshire.

His ethnicity, his move abroad, the impact of the war and the relatively sparse media coverage of football in his playing heyday contributed to Soo's relative anonymity, but much has been done over the past decade to celebrate his achievements.

In 2016 Gardiner's book pieced together local history, family records and newspapers archives to produce the most comprehensive record yet of Soo's story.

A year later, coach and community champion Alan Lau, having read the book, founded the Frank Soo Foundation to promote Soo's story.

In 2020 the foundation worked with Google to feature Soo as the search engine's 'Doodle', putting his likeness in front of millions of web browsers worldwide.

This month he was inducted into Stoke's Sporting Hall of Fame, marked by a half-time commemoration at the Bet365 Stadium.

Across town, on the site of Stoke's former Victoria Ground home, there is Frank Soo Street named in honour of a club legend.

There is scope for further commemoration.

In March Jack Leslie was awarded a posthumous cap by the FA. Leslie was the first black player to receive an England call-up in 1925, but his invite to play for his country was withdrawn when, his family believe, selectors realised the colour of his skin.

Soo, and the Asian heritage players that have followed in his wake, still await a breakthrough England cap.

Li Ke, who was known as Nico Yennaris during his time growing up in London and playing for Arsenal, Brentford and England's age-group sides, in 2019 became the first naturalised player to represent China.

Jiang Guantai, known as Tyias Browning while playing for Everton, Sunderland and England Under-21s, is now a regular for China.

In the women's game, Aston Villa's Maz Pacheco has said she is undecided over whether to play for the Philippines or England.

Before them all came Soo - a pioneer for non-white representation in English football, a Stoke City icon and a successful manager who overcame adversity in life and is emerging from anonymity in death.

World Gymnastics Championships: Simone Biles makes history with women's all-around gold

American Simone Biles has become the most decorated gymnast in history after winning her second gold medal at the World Gymnastics Championships.

After helping the United States to a record seventh consecutive team title earlier this week, the 26-year-old won all-around gold in Belgium on Friday.

Her total of 34 world and Olympic medals is more than any other gymnast, male or female.

Biles took gold with a score of 58.399 points.

She finished ahead of defending champion Rebeca Andrade of Brazil (56.766), while Biles' American team-mate Shilese Jones took bronze with a score of 56.332.

It continued Biles' impressive return to international competition, with the Antwerp event her first since taking a break from the sport two years ago to work on her mental health.

This triumph was her sixth all-around world title to take her overall tally to 27 world medals, which includes 21 golds.

She could extend that over the weekend where she will aim to make the podium in four other events in the apparatus finals.

Biles' impressive form comes with less than 10 months to go until the Olympics in Paris.

Late drama for Great Britain
Great Britain's 2022 world floor champion, Jessica Gadirova, dropped out of the all-around competition before it got under way, with British Gymnastics confirming she was withdrawn as a "precautionary measure".

Liverpool ask PGMOL for VAR audio from disallowed Luis Diaz goal at Tottenham

Liverpool have asked PGMOL for audio of discussions between the match officials in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Tottenham.

The video assistant referee (VAR) did not overturn an incorrect decision to disallow a Luis Diaz goal for offside.

PGMOL, the governing body for referees, said the decision to rule out the goal was "a significant human error".

On Sunday, Liverpool released a statement saying the explanation was "unacceptable" and that "sporting integrity has been undermined".

The club called for a "review with full transparency" and added they will "explore the range of options available given the clear need for escalation and resolution".

Darren England, who was on VAR duty during the game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and assistant VAR Dan Cook were stood down from duty for the rest of the weekend because of the error.

PGMOL recognised the two VAR officials failed to act correctly after Diaz's 34th-minute strike was wrongly ruled out for offside. The game was at 0-0 at that point, with Liverpool down to 10 men after Curtis Jones had been sent off following England's intervention.

In a statement released following the controversial game, PGMOL said the Diaz incident "was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention".

It is understood referees' chief Howard Webb has spoken to Liverpool about the incident.

Sexton was, once again, instrumental to an Ireland win. The 38-year-old, who will retire after the World Cup, ended the night on a career total of 1,090 points, seven clear of O'Gara, before being hooked at the break with his job done and the bonus point in the bag.

"I don't think it is about individual achievements this evening," Sexton said after the game.

"It is about getting the next win and keep building in this tournament. It's week-on-week in a World Cup and you have got to produce it week after week."

Ireland get job done before Boks showdown
Ultimately, Ireland just had too much for the 15th-ranked team in the world.

With Sexton and William Havili having exchanged early penalties, Ireland prop Andrew Porter had an opener ruled out by the television match official (TMO) for Hansen's knock-on.

Ireland were not forced to wait long, however, as Beirne broke Tonga's early resistance. The Munster lock, who scored twice against Romania, stretched to touch down under the posts, wrapping up a move that was started by Sexton's switch of play.

Havili's second penalty reduced the deficit to four but Ireland were gifted a second try, with Doris going over after Solomone Kata's foul on James Lowe handed the Grand Slam winners a penalty deep inside the Tongan 22.

If Ireland's second was down to Tonga's indiscipline, their third was a product of Hansen's winged wizardry. After collecting a Keenan pass, the Connacht wing danced through a sea of red jerseys and moved the Irish further clear.

And while Ronan Kelleher failed to ground the ball, Ireland's captain soon delivered the bonus point as he slipped through the Tongan defence to score his third try of the tournament and move past O'Gara's mark of 1,083 points, and added the conversion before he was replaced by Ross Byrne at half-time.

Undeterred, Tonga finished the half strongly. After Ireland flanker Peter O'Mahony was sin-binned, the Pacific Islanders piled on the pressure before Fifita crossed.

Unfortunately for Tonga, they were unable to build on a rousing end to the first period, but while they began to show signs of fatigue, Ireland's insatiable appetite for tries shone through.

First, Lowe dived over following a maul before the in-form Aki emulated his double against Romania to continue his exceptional start to the tournament.

Then Herring - who was earlier denied a try by the officials - wrapped up victory for Ireland, for whom it was another job well done.

Ireland can enjoy a rest on Sunday before focus switches to Saturday's heavyweight showdown with three-time champions South Africa at the Stade de France.

Former Ireland flanker Chris Henry on BBC Radio Ulster: "That's a pretty awesome result. Ireland are just so ruthless and relentless.

"Tonga, we knew they were gong to put up a fight but still the score line is incredible and everything is still just pointing in the right direction for this Irish team and it's a pleasure to watch them at the moment.

"The key thing is that Sexton got another great 40 minutes and there's a lot of positives. The best is yet to come from this Irish team."

Manchester United: Jadon Sancho to train separately from first team

Man Utd winger Jadon Sancho will train away from the first team until issues with manager Erik ten Hag are resolved.

Ten Hag left Sancho out of his squad for the loss at Arsenal earlier this month, saying the winger's training performances had been below standard.

Sancho, 23, rejected the Dutchman's reasoning and claimed he had been

United said in a statement Sancho would be on a "personal training programme away from the first team".

The statement added that the decision was made "pending resolution of a squad discipline issue."

The news comes in a week where another United forward, Antony, also stepped away from first-team duties amid domestic abuse allegations made by his former partner.

He returned to action in the EFL Cup semi-final win against Nottingham Forest on 1 February and a week later sparked a comeback against Leeds United in the Premier League, scoring the equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

Richarlison: Tottenham striker says he will 'seek psychological help'

Tottenham striker Richarlison says he will "seek psychological help" when he returns to England after the international break.

Richarlison was pictured in tears after being substituted during Brazil's 5-1 win over Bolivia on Saturday.

He said the reaction was down to "getting the things that were happening off the pitch out of my system".

Richarlison has scored only four goals in 40 games for Spurs since joining for £60m from Everton last summer.

"I went through a turbulent time off the pitch during these past five months," he told

"Now things are a bit more stable at home. People who only had their eye on my money are no longer close to me.

"Things are going to flow now and I'm certain that I will have a good run at Tottenham and will make things happen again.

"I'm going to return to England and seek psychological help, from a psychologist, to strengthen my mind. That's what it is about, to come back stronger."

Richarlison missed a great chance before being replaced in the 71st minute in the home World Cup qualifier against Bolivia in Belem, and was substituted 64 minutes into Tuesday's 1-0 win over Peru in Lima.

O Globo reported that Richarlison has split with long-term agent Renato Velasco.

"That moment of sadness wasn't about having played badly," said Richarlison.

"In my opinion, I didn't play a bad match in Belem. It was more about getting the things that were happening off the pitch out of my system, which had gotten out of control not because if anything I'd done but because of people close to me."

Scotland slipped to defeat in their World Cup opener as defending champions South Africa put in a typically ruthless and powerful display in Marseille.

That never materialised at any point, but in the first half the way the forwards went about taking the game to their opposite numbers was admirable.

A scrum penalty right on half-time felt significant as Finn Russell made no mistake with his kick to leave the score 6-3 at the break, Libbok having put over two of his three efforts before that.

But it proved the high point for Scotland as South Africa brutally re-asserted control. Du Toit was eventually the man to batter past the dark blue defensive line on 47 minutes, and they swiftly did further damage.

Defensive pressure forced Scotland back and eventually a turnover yielded ball for Libbok who, having been somewhat wayward off the tee, produced the moment of the match as his no-look kick-pass found Arendse on the wing and he scampered in.

There seemed no way back for Scotland at that point. Penalties mounted, lineouts failed to find targets, and their attack struggled to fire a shot against South Africa's blitz defence.

That said, had Darcy Graham used a two-man overlap in the first half as he should have, things might have been different. As it was Scotland ended without a try, or even a second-half point, to show for their efforts.

Other than Libbok's moment of brilliance, there was no champagne rugby from South Africa. After a scrappy first 40 they merely doubled down on what makes them so hard to play against.

Their blitz defence to shut down Scotland's attack forced errors, and that was combined with a strong set-piece and physical dominance.

It was not perhaps a performance that will make other sides sit up and take notice - like the demolition of New Zealand in their final warm-up - but they turned up the heat just enough to burn Scotland.

They can consider themselves fortunate that Kriel's tackle on Jack Dempsey, which resulted in a head clash similar to Tom Curry's on Saturday evening, escaped without punishment.

The Springboks will also expect to improve as they eye a massive meeting with Ireland on 23 September at Stade de France.

"I'm really proud how we fronted up physically. I thought our defence was excellent, we really took it to them physically.

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend: "We felt we'd kick on in the second half and we didn't. A lot of that is down to our inaccuracy. We know we have to better. We didn't get into the flow of our game."

South Africa head coach Jacques Nienaber: "I think it could have been a slippery one. Scotland are a good side - they are not number five in the world for nothing.

"They pushed things a long way in the game, I thought we had a little bit of dominance in the first half but we had to grind the win out."

Mitchell wildcard
Prior to his injury, Leicester Tigers' Van Poortvliet had been Borthwick's favoured scrum-half, having started every game in the Six Nations, with the 22-year-old known for his strong kicking game.

Mitchell, 26, who is more of a running scrum-half, scored seven tries in the Premiership last season for Northampton Saints, but missed out on the initial 33-man squad.

However, he started England's final warm-up game against Fiji, winning only his sixth cap, as Borthwick favoured him ahead of veteran scrum-halves Care and Youngs.

With just five tries in four warm-up matches, England's attack may require more energy and dynamism, and Mitchell can help create "organised chaos" according to former England international Ugo Moyne.

Pumas go with experience
Argentina, who won 30-29 against England at Twickenham in November, have named an experienced team, including nine players in the starting XV who have World Cup experience.

Premiership-based players include captain Julian Montoya from Leicester Tigers and Gloucester fly-half Santiago Carreras.

Replacement hooker Agustin Creevy, 38, will play in his fourth World Cup, joining Mario Ledesma, Felipe Contepomi and Martin Scelzo for most tournaments featured at by an Argentine.

Antony: Brazil drop Manchester United winger after abuse allegations

Brazil have dropped Manchester United winger Antony following allegations of abuse by his former girlfriend.

The Brazilian football federation said the 23-year-old had been withdrawn from the squad after "facts became public" that "need to be investigated".

Brazilian news outlet UOL published allegations made by Antony's ex-partner on Monday.

Police in Sao Paulo and Greater Manchester are investigating the claims, which the player has denied.

"I can calmly state that the accusations are false and that the evidence already produced and the other evidence that will be produced demonstrate that I am innocent of the accusations made," Antony said on social media.

"I trust that the ongoing police investigations will demonstrate the truth about my innocence."

Antony is accused of attacking his former girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin "with a headbutt" in a Manchester hotel room on 15 January, leaving her with a cut head which needed treatment from a doctor.

She also alleges she was punched in the chest, causing damage to a silicone breast implant, which required corrective surgery.

Antony added in his statement on Monday that his relationship with his former partner was "tumultuous", but insisted he "never committed any physical aggression".

He also released a statement in June saying he had been falsely accused by his former girlfriend of domestic violence.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said it is "aware of the allegations made and enquiries remain ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding this report".

It added: "We will not be commenting any further at this time."

Manchester United said they had no comment on the matter at present when contacted by BBC Sport.

The allegations come after the Premier League club announced last month that forward Mason Greenwood would leave by mutual agreement following a six-month internal investigation.

Ten Hag 'doesn't worry about upsetting his big stars'

ESPN senior writer Mark Ogden, says Jadon Sancho's not "giving himself the best chance" of kicking on in his career because of his reportedly poor timekeeping and effort in training.

Speaking on the Football Daily podcast, Ogden said: "During Sunday’s game, I spoke to one of the club’s press people during the first half and asked where Sancho is and he said the manager will address it after the game.

"So it was a plan and not a case of Erik ten Hag being caught out in the press conference. The answer was ready to come.

"In terms of isolated incidents, I don’t think it’s that. I’ve been told it’s because he’s not a great trainer and we’ve seen in the past with England that he’s got timekeeping issues.

"There’s an argument that Manchester United really tried to get him back on track with these issues, as they sent him to Holland last year and tried to look after him. But he’s come back and he’s not kicked on. If you don’t train well then you don’t play, so he’s not giving himself the best chance.

"As Ten Hag showed last year when he took on Ronaldo and Rashford, he doesn't worry about upsetting his big stars."

BBC football pundit Chris Sutton, believes that both Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag and Jadon Sancho are in the wrong over their dispute and have "opened up a can of worms."

Speaking on the Football Daily podcast, Sutton said: "How is this going to end?

"Ten Hag had two choices, to call him out or not call him out.

"Sancho may have felt he could have worked his way back into the manager's thinking but doing this opens up a massive can of worms.

"Manchester United haven’t got started this season and I just wonder whether Ten Hag has kicked off at Sancho after the game because he’s feeling the pressure a little bit.

"But it was the wrong thing to do. I think he should have thought about this more carefully because every action has a consequence. It’s not a good look for Manchester United.

"For what it’s worth, I think it’s absolutely wrong for Sancho to respond that way in public. If he’s got a problem then go and bang on the manager's door and have a private conversation. That’s the best way to deal with it.

Novak Djokovic will replace young rival Carlos Alcaraz as the men's world number one after a routine win on his US Open return.

Serbia's Djokovic, who lost the Wimbledon final to Alcaraz, won 6-0 6-2 6-3 against France's Alexandre Muller in Monday's night session in New York.

Kane scores twice as Bayern Munich beat Augsburg

England captain Harry Kane scored twice on his home Bundesliga debut for Bayern Munich as the champions continued their winning start to the league season.

Kane became the first English player to score in his first two Bundesliga games when he clipped a penalty down the middle just before half-time.

The ex-Tottenham forward wrapped up the 3-1 win after the break with a lovely finish with the outside of his foot.

Thomas Tuchel's side dominated possession throughout.

After a sluggish start, Bayern got into their stride and opened the scoring when Leroy Sane's shot hit the post and went in off defender Felix Uduokhai.

Referee Sascha Stegemann then awarded a penalty for Niklas Dorsch's handball after being called to check his monitor by the Video Assistant Referee, with Kane converting the spot-kick with ease.

After the break Bayern looked far brighter, Sane curling a fine shot against the post, before Alphonso Davies found Kane onside and free in the middle to loft a calm finish into the net.

Substitute Dion Beljo wriggled free to poke in a late consolation for the visitors, while Kane wasted a chance to complete his hat-trick when he headed wide.

However, he has now scored in his last seven league appearances, stretching back to his time in the Premier League at Spurs.

Dutch Grand Prix: Max Verstappen survives losing lead to equal all-time consecutive wins record

Red Bull's Max Verstappen survived losing the lead in early rain and a red flag for a late torrential downpour to win a chaotic Dutch Grand Prix.

Verstappen equalled the all-time record of nine victories in a row and took his 11th win of the season to extend his championship lead to 138 points.

A shower just as the race started dropped Verstappen to second behind team-mate Sergio Perez before he repassed on lap 13, while heavy rain with eight laps to go forced a red flag and a 45-minute delay.

But through it all Verstappen was always in control, as he has been for the entire season, and never really looked like losing the race.

Fernando Alonso starred in the Aston Martin to finish second after a typically combative race, while Alpine's Pierre Gasly took the final podium position after Sergio Perez, who finished third on the track, was penalised for speeding in the pit lane.

Perez had been running second behind Verstappen but lost the place to Alonso when he went off at Turn One after changing to intermediate tyres when the rain came down just before the race was stopped.

In the final seven racing laps, Perez did enough to prevent dropping behind Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who fended off an attack from Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes.

McLaren's Lando Norris took seventh ahead of Williams' Alex Albon, outstanding in being the only driver to brave staying out on dry-weather tyres throughout the first rain period.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Alpine's Esteban Ocon completed the top 10 points positions, while Alonso deprived Verstappen of fastest lap by pushing hard as the final rain shower approached the track.

Sprint to the chequered flag
The final sprint to the end was relatively uneventful after such a madcap race, as Verstappen eased away from Alonso on a wet track following a restart behind the safety car and the Spaniard held off Perez's attacks.

For Aston Martin it was an encouraging performance, after they slipped to the back of the pack chasing Red Bull in the four races before the summer break.

An upgrade featuring a new floor for this race seems to have returned the car to its former position, and Alonso went with it with an outstanding drive.

Gasly had benefited from being one of the drivers who stopped at the end of the first lap, and the Frenchman drove a strong race from there on to hang on in the pack at the front and fend off an attack from Sainz.

He even managed to make up for a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane to take his first podium of the season.

Before the red flag
The capacity crowd almost entirely made up of fans supporting their home hero were expecting and hoping for a Verstappen demonstration. They got it, but not perhaps in the way anticipated.

With Verstappen leading away from pole, rain started as the lights went out and the action started immediately.

Alonso, starting fifth, passed Albon around the outside in Turn Two, dived down the inside of the heavily banked Hugenholzbocht that follows past Russell's Mercedes.

The next lap, he drew in front of Lando Norris' McLaren out of the same corner on the run to the daunting Scheivlak corner that follows.

The rain came down increasingly heavily through that first lap, and Perez, who had started seventh, dived into the pits for treaded intermediate tyres at the end of it.

But none of the other frontrunners followed him in - the next highest driver to pit was Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who stared ninth - and the decision won Perez the lead.

Verstappen and Alonso, still on slick tyres, lost time on the second lap and when they pitted at the end of it they came out in fifth and seventh places before other drivers started to pit.

But while Perez now had a 14-second and three-place lead over his team-mate, Verstappen's superiority was quickly apparent, as he began to carve into the Mexican's advantage.

By lap 10, Verstappen was less than five seconds behind Perez, and a lap later Verstappen was in the pits for a change to slick tyres.

Perez followed him in a lap later, but Verstappen had made up so much time on his out lap that he was nearly three seconds in front when his team-mate rejoined.

That was effectively the end of the race for the win, but there was plenty of action behind.

England lost to Fiji for the first time ever and slumped to a fifth defeat in six games as their Rugby World Cup preparations ended with another blow.

The Pacific Islanders scored three second-half tries at Twickenham as England's fragile defence struggled to contend with their power.

England salvaged hope late on when Joe Marchant's try and George Ford's conversion brought them within a point.

But Selestino Ravutaumada set up Simione Kuruvoli to seal victory.

The day began with a sense of optimism for England as Courtney Lawes led out the hosts to mark his 100th cap.

By the time the full-time whistle sounded, the gloom around English rugby had deepened even further with their first defeat by a side from outside the Six Nations and the Rugby Championship, two weeks before the start of their World Cup campaign against Argentina.

Disappointing preparations come to an end
England's warm-up campaign has been underpinned by discipline issues, key injuries and poor form.

As many fans stayed away, the entire top section of Twickenham was closed apart from a small section of seating occupied by England's players not involved in the matchday squad, including banned duo Owen Farrell and Billy Vunipola.

Captain Farrell and Vunipola, the only specialist number eight in the squad, are serving bans for high tackles which will see them both miss the World Cup opener with Argentina.

Jack van Poortvliet (ankle) and Anthony Watson (calf) have also withdrawn from England's 33-man squad with injuries.

Coach Steve Borthwick has named Alex Mitchell as Van Poortvliet's replacement and has until Monday to confirm his final squad, which is likely to include Jonny May after his try-scoring return to the international fold, while one of England's standout performers in the 2019 World Cup, Tom Curry, has not played all summer.

May ended their wait for a back to score since Freddie Steward's consolation try in the Six Nations humiliation by France in March, but utility backs Marcus Smith and Marchant also got on the scoresheet in the second half against Fiji.

For the opening 20 minutes England played on the front foot as Manu Tuilagi's direct running proved to be a threat in midfield.

They were rewarded when May, who appeared to be conducting a final audition for a place in the World Cup squad after Watson's injury, handed off Ravutaumada to score in the corner and end England's wait of more than six hours for a try from the backline.

But as the rain began to fall England's dominance waned, though the conditions should in theory have favoured the hosts and hampered the visitors' free-flowing off-load game.

Waisea Nayacalevu had a try chalked off in the first half for a forward pass in the build-up, but three minutes after the break he went over legally after Ravutaumada did to May what May had done to him in the opening exchanges.

Vinaya Habosi scored Fiji's second try as he nonchalantly picked up the ball from the base of a ruck and raced clear to send the small pocket of travelling fans into delirium.

Smith's introduction at full-back off the bench was an attempt offer England a spark in attack, and for the second time in as many games at Twickenham the hosts rallied after going behind, as they did in the narrow win over Wales two weeks earlier.

Ford chipped over the onrushing Fijian defence for Smith to gather the loose ball and score under the posts, but Caleb Muntz's boot kept England at arm's length.

Marchant's finish late on handed Borthwick's side hope but the elusive Ravutaumada skipped back inside and freed his arms to offload for Kuruvoli to dive over and extinguish any hopes of an England comeback.

Last season's Treble winners have agree a five-year contract with the 21-year-old, who scored 10 goals in 75 Ligue 1 appearances across three seasons.

Doku, who has 16 caps for Belgium, has taken the number 11 shirt.

"This is a great day for me, both personally and professionally. City are the best team in world football, so joining them is special," Doku said.

Doku becomes Pep Guardiola's third summer signing after midfielder Mateo Kovacic arrived for £25m from Chelsea and defender former RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol joined for £77m.

West Ham, Tottenham and Chelsea had also been interested in signing Doku, who scored seven goals in 35 games last season.

Doku had two years left on the five-year deal he signed when Rennes paid 26m euros (£22.3m) to sign him from Anderlecht in October 2020, shortly after he made his international debut as a teenager.

Doku cited the opportunity to work under City boss Guardiola as a key factor in his decision to join the Premier League champions.

Dina Asher-Smith missed out on a 100m medal at the World Championships in Budapest as American Sha'Carri Richardson beat a star-studded field of rivals to claim her first major title.

Britain's Asher-Smith finished a disappointing eighth in 11.00 seconds after scraping through the semi-finals.

Richardson, contesting her first major final at 23, clocked a championship record 10.65 secs to take victory.

Jackson, the reigning 200m champion, ran 10.72 secs as compatriot and record five-time champion Fraser-Pryce finished in 10.77.

Three-time individual world medal winner Asher-Smith, who was crowned 200m champion in 2019, was left unsure as to why she could not perform at the level she expected.

"I'm almost in disbelief. I know myself and I know that I feel good. I came here for a new personal best," she said.

Asher-Smith appeared to have qualified for the medal race as the last non-automatic qualifier by one thousandth of a second.

At first, Richardson simply could not believe it.

Puzzling disappointment for Asher-Smith

Achieving a medal always appeared a tall task for Asher-Smith, even on her very best day.

The signs were not good in the semi-finals, with something evidently not right as she faded following a positive start to place third - outside of the automatic qualification places.

One year after she missed out on world 100m bronze by 0.02 secs, it appeared she had fallen on the right side of a narrow margin this time, until an allowance was made for the unfortunate Swoboda to race too.

But there was to be no miraculous turnaround in the final, and she must now look ahead to ensuring she is ready for the 200m heats on Wednesday."Towards the end of the semi-final I just couldn't feel my legs anymore, which was a bit strange," Asher-Smith said."I don't want to make a huge deal because at the end of the day I crossed the line, felt fine, got on with it, made the final, and felt absolutely fine during the final."I felt great but [it was] a mad day, mad day."

Spain captain Olga Carmona, who scored her country's winner in the Women's World Cup final, was told after the game that her father had died.

Carmona, 23, scored the only goal as Spain beat England to claim the trophy.

The Real Madrid left-back's father had been fighting a long illness and died on Friday, Reuters reported.

"The RFEF deeply regrets to announce the death of Olga Carmona's father," the Spanish Football Association (RFEF) wrote on social media.

Women's World Cup 2023: Jorge Vilda says Spain players are 'eternal' after they beat England

Even in glorious triumph, sounds of disapproval rang out in Jorge Vilda's direction.

As his players celebrated winning the World Cup for the first time after defeating England 1-0, boos rang out in the crowd when the jubilant Spain boss was pictured on the big screen being congratulated by Spain's Queen Letizia at Stadium Australia.

Moments earlier, Vilda had looked up to the sky, raised his hands and screamed with joy when the referee ended the match to confirm Spain as world champions.

Controversy has followed Vilda at every turn of this tournament and even in victory there was no escape.

This will go down as one of the most remarkable triumphs in Women's World Cup history, with Spain entering the tournament amid a backdrop of unrest and a number of players unhappy with Vilda, who had survived a player revolt to keep his job.

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) released a statement revealing that 15 players had submitted identical emails saying they would not play for Vilda unless "significant" concerns over their "emotional state" and "health" were addressed.

"Las 15", as the players became known, denied claims they had asked for 42-year-old Vilda to be sacked, but tension followed amid reports of concern over training methods and inadequate game preparation.



Yet in Australia and New Zealand, his players put aside their differences to conquer the world in an impressive style at just their third World Cup, prompting Spain's official Twitter account to post:

Spain were made to wait before they could finally celebrate. After 13 minutes of stoppage time were signalled at the end of 90 minutes, it was not until the 105th minute that the referee brought the final to an end.

After his side's World Cup victory, Vilda described the Japan defeat as a "turning point", adding: "It made us react, the team changed and the players increased their contributions. Mentally they were much stronger.

Indeed, Spain bounced back from that setback to defeat Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden to make the final.

Against European champions England, La Roja produced a tactical masterclass. Even after captain Olga Carmona's winner, they enjoyed more possession and attempts on target.

"For me, it's credit to those players," former England striker Ellen White told BBC One. "To win a World Cup is just absolutely phenomenal.

"It takes a lot of guts, mentality, desire, hard work, togetherness. The way this Spanish team played today was just unbelievable.

'Progress has been phenomenal'
Seventeen of the 23-player squad were appearing at their first World Cup including keeper Cata Coll and 19-year-old forward Salma Paralluelo.

Despite the controversy that followed him around, Vilda was not afraid to make bold decisions.

After the defeat by Japan, he gave a senior debut to Coll, while Paralluelo came off the bench to score in back-to-back games as Spain performed admirably throughout the knockout stages before deservedly overcoming England.

Spain's players performed on the pitch despite all of the noise off it.

Before the semi-final win over Sweden, long-serving forward Jenni Hermoso spoke emotionally of the progress made in the women's game since she made her senior international debut in 2012 when she used to play in front of crowds of a few hundred.

On Sunday, she celebrated winning the World Cup in front of 75,000 in Sydney.

Spain now have women's world titles at senior, under-17 and under-20 levels.

"This Spanish side, this nation, what they have achieved in women's football over the last two years is phenomenal," added White.

'This is unstoppable'
Vilda, who has been in charge since 2015, was asked afterwards whether he would pursue other job opportunities after masterminding Spain's World Cup success.

His contract with the national team is due to expire in 2024.

"Right now we are going to celebrate," said Vilda. "We are going back to Spain to see our loved ones and we will see."
