Klopp turned to his bench, bringing on Diogo Jota for Henderson, but with Tottenham defending so deep it was awkward for Liverpool to find any openings. When Salah thought he had, his fierce shot was heroically blocked by Ben Davies.

When the 73rd minute equaliser did come, it was via a deflection. Unfortunate for Rodrigo Bentancur and Spurs but no more than Diaz deserved for being the most enterprising player on the pitch for much of the game. It restored belief that the game could still be won.

But Spurs held firm, their fans chanting Conte's name throughout, and Cristian Romero up to anything that Liverpool threw at him, with the Kop begging for the ball to hit the net again. It did not. And their hopes of that historic Quadruple may have all but gone.

Klopp's verdict: The boys are disappointed On the game…

"It was always clear, Tottenham would show like they show, with individual quality and a game plan, it was clear it would be incredibly difficult.

"It doesn't get easier when you concede a goal. But I was really happy with a lot of things I saw in the game.

"We said at half-time we could have shown more initiative. I thought we did that in the second half and then we conceded a goal.

"Anything can happen after that. Nothing happened. The stadium was there, the boys kept calm, increasing the pressure without opening up too much. We scored a goal.

"We could have won, but we could have lost as well, with their insane counter-attack."

On the title race…

"It is an important point because it is one point more than before the game. That is how it is. But we all know the situation. We are now top of the table.

"If you ask me, my favourite situation would be if it stays like this, on the same points total because City and us lose the rest of the games in the Premier League. That would be great. But we all know this is not going to happen.

"The boys are more disappointed than I am. That might be because of my age and because I have seen pretty much everything in my life. But we will go again."

Conte's verdict: The draw is fair
On the game…

"It is not easy to play in this moment against an amazing team, especially at Anfield with lots of noise. It is not simple.

"For sure, to have a good result was positive. On the other hand, I think maybe we have to be a bit disappointed. I have seen, in the eyes of my players, disappointment because we had the chance to win the game.

"But I repeat, a good performance. I asked my players to be good defensively and I don't think we conceded any chances. We conceded a goal to a deflection.

"With the ball, I asked my players to show courage, because Liverpool press you in a good way. If you can play through that you can find space and have chances to score.

"But I think the draw is fair."

On top-four race…

"There are three games to go for us, four games for Arsenal. Not easy for us, not easy for Arsenal. In November, not many people could believe Tottenham could fight to the end for the Champions League.

"On Thursday, we have an important game, a London derby against our rival, our rival in this race. I want to get the points because it is important to have hope of the Champions League."

WBO champion Stevenson (17-0) and WBC belt holder Valdez (30-0) put their respective world titles on the line in Las Vegas, live on Sky Sports.

American star Stevenson claimed the WBO belt with a 10th-round stoppage of countryman Jamel Herring in October as he followed Valdez in becoming a two-weight world champion, with both fighters formerly holding the WBO featherweight title.

Stevenson told Sky Sports he believes Valdez did not want to fight him at featherweight and feels the Mexican may regret taking the bout in a higher weight class, saying there is “definitely” a chance of him winning via knockout.

Stevenson said of the verbal battle: “I’m fully under his skin, I know for a fact. I can clearly tell I’m under his skin. This rivalry has been going a long time.

“I have been trying to fight him. I was his mandatory at 126lb but the fight didn’t happen at that time. Maybe it’s destiny but I believe he didn’t want to fight at that time.

“He waited this long and I feel it was a bad idea for him to wait. They’ve got a more-experienced Shakur Stevenson, not the same one they would have got when I was 126lb.

“I’m going in and I’m going to dominate. Whatever game plan I have, I want to execute. That’s what I’ll do on Saturday night, I’m going in there to win every round.

“[Most definitely] there could be a knockout. A lot of people are saying the fight will go to unanimous decision, with me winning, but don’t sleep on that. There’s very much a possibility I could catch him with a good shot.

“I’m in a hell of a shape, I’m just so ready to fight now, ready to go in and do what I’ve been trying to do. This is the biggest fight of my career. I’m excited, I can’t wait to perform.”

Stevenson: I am relaxed like Floyd Mayweather

Stevenson says he has the Floyd Mayweather Jr “mindset” of staying calm in and around huge fights and has vowed to “shine” at the MGM Grand Garden Arena this weekend.

The New Jersey-born southpaw “respects” Valdez for taking on the fight and believes the duo’s battle is “great for boxing”.

Stevenson said: “I watch old Floyd [Mayweather] fights where he sells out arenas. If you pay attention to him, he is so relaxed.

“I feel like I’ve got that kind of mindset where I block everything out. I’m focused on fighting, making sure I’m relaxed. My mindset is that it’s another day in the office.

On Valdez, who has 23 knockout victories on his CV, Stevenson added: “I understand and respect the fact he’s taking a risk, he didn’t have to take the challenge, a big challenge.

“You got to respect him outside the ring, the character to sign the contract, I respect every bit of it but inside I don’t respect him. I’ve got no respect. I won’t respect anything inside the ring.

“It’s going to be a great fight and I feel I always step up to the plate in the biggest moments. On Saturday night, I’m going to step up to the plate. I’m going to shine.”

“So, we showed actually one situation and we stopped it eight times and we showed what we could have done differently in the specific moments. So, accelerations, playing in the half spaces, getting behind the line, chipping balls in behind the line.

“It can happen against a deep formation that you have too many players behind the ball, obviously.

“So, we had a lot of passers but not a lot of receivers. The receivers only really move when they see that they can get the ball. We need these movements without getting the ball to destruct the formation a little bit and we did not do that.

“In football, there is always an explanation for things you don’t do well. That’s the good thing about it. So we improved and then we thought that with the changes that we made we could then give them another task to deal with, adding a second striker in the centre.

“We did not need another build-up player, really, in these moments, we had enough players with the ball in possession.”

Naby Keita was removed. Divock Origi was introduced. It left Liverpool more exposed defensively, with Gordon’s raids down the left proving a source of hope for Everton. It was something Klopp tried to adjust to stop.

“Anthony was on his bike a couple of times and we cannot leave Anthony out there alone, it makes no sense,” he explained.

“We told Trent to play from a little bit deeper and we wanted Fab on that side as well. So we knew where the threat was coming from. We still could not always defend it in the first place, that is how it is.

“But if you don’t take risks you cannot win a football game.”

Brentford midfielder Christian Eriksen, who was facing his former side for the first time since leaving Spurs two years ago, also went close twice for the home side.
The goalless draw means Spurs are fifth, two points behind Arsenal who moved fourth following their victory over Manchester United on Saturday.

And the pressure applied by Mikel Arteta’s side, coupled with last week’s damaging home defeat to Brighton, saw Tottenham start nervously as Brentford, buoyed by three straight wins, took control of the game.

Eriksen created Brentford’s best chance of the half as his corner was headed against the bar by Toney in the 18th minute.

Spurs were so underwhelming in the opening 45 minutes that their most threatening attempt came from Rodrigo Bentancur’s wild effort (28) that went well over.

Conte would surely have given his team a stern half-time team talk and it appeared to work as Spurs began the second half well, mounting more attacks with Kane having an effort (52) deflected over the bar by Bees skipper Jansson.

It was roles reversed 14 minutes later as Kane cleared Jansson’s header off the line. The rebound fell to Eriksen whose low shot from a tight angle was saved down low by Lloris and then scrambled away by Ben Davies.

Eriksen’s effort was his second in as many minutes, a shot from distance deflecting just wide of Lloris’ post.

Both teams came close to finding a winner in added-time as Toney hit the post from Eriksen’s free-kick in the 91st minute, with Bryan Mbeumo putting the rebound in the side-netting.

A minute later, Kane then attempted an audacious scissor-kick that whistled just wide of David Raya’s post.

But it was a rare moment of quality in a poor Spurs performance that has handed the initiative to their north London rivals Arsenal in the race for Champions League football.

One of the big talking points ahead of the game was Eriksen potentially lining up for the first time against the club where he made his mark in English football.

It was always going to be a poignant affair, especially given how unlikely a proposition that seemed when the playmaker collapsed while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020.

Eriksen told Sky Sports News ahead of the game that the occasion would be a special one, and he produced a performance to match it.

Given licence to roam by head coach Thomas Frank, Eriksen was at the heart of Brentford’s attacking endeavours, pulling the strings and creating chances for the forwards. It was like he had never been away from the Premier League.

“I was playing Tottenham for the first time since I left, but it was lovely,” he said afterwards

“Of course the first pass is always the chosen one, seeing what happens today, and the first one went well and then after it’s ‘oh let’s play’ and the nerves are gone.”

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank:

“[Eriksen] is obviously fantastic. I think we are all happy he is playing football again and he’s enjoying it. You can see him playing with a smile.

“He played a good game today but I would say I think it was the whole team.

“I think against a full-strength Tottenham side and we have a lot of injuries and we had to move players around.

“[We were] without our normal two centre-backs, normal wing-back and normal number six – one of our most consistent players in Christian Norgaard – we kept Tottenham to more-or-less nothing.

“The front two of Harry Kane and [Heung-Min] Son, the most dangerous in the Premier League, were kept very quiet. Plus, we were good on the ball and we created chances. I think it’s an extremely impressive [performance].”

Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte:

“It was a tough game. For sure, it was very difficult. They are a very physical team and they tried to exploit set pieces in a very dangerous way. I think defensively we were good but at the same time, I think we can do much better with the ball to create more chances to score. The intensity was very high and there were many tackles but we knew what type of game we were coming to play. It’s a draw and I think it’s important when you cannot win, you take one point, and we did that.

“We have to try to give our best [to finish in the top four]. Now we are in this race and we have to try to stay in it, but we know it is very difficult. We have to live this situation with great enthusiasm, and today was a good draw.”

“The performance wasn’t good enough. I was really surprised at how poor Spurs were. The two results that they have just had back-to-back are just not good enough.

“They have been playing exceptional football [under Conte], but if you look at the title race, that is Ali-Frazier. But if you look at the top four race, it’s a pillow fight.

“There are going to be so many mistakes, teams throwing away points, that’s how it is going to be. I don’t look at either side with a great deal of confidence. And I look at that game [that Spurs have] away at Liverpool, and I think that’s where everything will be won or lost, the title and the top four.”

With two whole weeks off after its season-ending victory over Saint Mary’s, Cal rugby has had plenty of time to reflect on the monumental task that awaits it: claiming its first officially recognized Division I-A rugby national title since 2011. The first step on that journey to glory comes this Saturday at noon against Central Washington in the West Region National Semifinals.

The Bears won the invitational Varsity Cup in 2016 and 2017, a tournament that was viewed as a national championship by some but is not officially recognized as a national title by USA Rugby. They played in two consecutive national championships in 2018 and 2019, losing both to Life University. The first was a devastating 60-5 blowout, and the second was a 29-26 heartbreaker that went down to the final minutes.

A DI-A champion is not listed for the 2020 and 2021 seasons, both of which saw schedules severely disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The expectations for the blue and gold are high this season: The team is the No. 1 seed in the west region going into the playoffs, and finished the regular season No. 1 in the College Rugby Association of America’s DI-A rankings.

“I back every single one of us to get the job done,” said team captain Sam Golla.

Golla cautioned, however, that it is too early to focus on the national championship. He said the team is taking it one week at a time, starting with No. 4 seed Central Washington.

“They are really physical at the tackle and the breakdown,” Golla said, also calling Central Washington a well-coached team.

The Wildcats finished the regular season as the No. 7 team in the nation, and faced No. 6 seed (and No. 18 overall) Cal Poly in the playoff’s quarterfinals. They dominated the Mustangs 62-17, earning a place in the semifinals and proving that they are a threat in the West Region.
“We can’t look past Central Washington,” said Cal head coach Jack Clark. “They require 100% of our focus.”

This will not be the first time the Bears have faced the Wildcats this season. Cal triumphed 48-19 when it hosted them March 11, although Central Washington put up a fight in the second half. Senior wing Nick Bloom and junior fullback Max Schumacher each scored two tries in the match, while Golla and senior flanker Jake Broekhuizen wreaked havoc on the Wildcats’ lineout.

“Central is a physical team,” Clark said. “Our approach needs to match their physicality.”

He said that they are good at limiting scoring opportunities, increasing the importance of the Bears capitalizing when they have the chance.

Both teams feature stars to watch in this matchup. For the Bears, Golla has been a big part of the team’s success this season. The 6’4” forward is all over the field for the blue and gold, with powerful carries, reliable tackling, and set-piece dominance in the lineout and scrum. When asked to describe his leadership style, Golla’s answer was telling: He deflected the credit to his teammates.

“It helps that I’ve got a bunch of other guys on the team who also lead by example,” Golla said.

He explained that his approach involves a mixture of vocal leadership and setting a positive example for his teammates.

“Sam is an all-around very skilled and tough player,” Clark said. “Additionally, he is among the fittest players on the team, which allows him a great capacity for work.”

Golla’s coach is not the only one who has noticed his achievements this year; he is one of 16 nominees for the Rudy Scholz award, given to the best players in men’s college rugby. This marks the sixth time a Cal player has been nominated for the award since 2017.

The Wildcats boast a Rudy Scholz award hopeful of their own. Center and grad student Jack Wendling, a Washington local, is also listed among the 16 nominees. He starred not only for his college, but also for the USA National Team’s U23 squads in both 7’s and 15’s. He was named to the USA National 7’s senior team for a brief stint as well.

Wending is a strong carrier and tackler in the midfield, and will be crucial to the Wildcats’ hopes this weekend.

The Bears will be in action at noon Saturday at Witter Rugby Field. The winner of the match will take on either St. Mary’s or BYU the following weekend in the West Region Finals.

Cal track and field traveled down to Southern California, trading out overcast and drizzling weather for sunnier skies. It won’t be a vacation — with three meets taking place over just a few days, this is the busiest week yet for the Bears.

The Mt. Sac Relays held in Walnut, CA kicked off the Bears’ stacked schedule with decathlon and heptathlon competitions starting on Wednesday and events extending into the weekend. Cal will be splitting its roster between the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, CA from April 14-15 and the Long Beach Invitational from April 15-16.

Mt. Sac Relays

A hefty portion of the roster will be competing in Walnut at the Mt. Sac Relays, including some of Cal’s most formidable talent.

Ezinne Abba will be running the 100 meter and 200 meter and Asha Fletcher is entered into the long and triple jump. Camryn Rogers is all but certain to take first place in her event of choice, the hammer throw. Quite a few throwers, including Jasmine Blair, Rebecca Tomann, Anna Purchase and Ivar Moisander, will be competing at the Mt. Sac Relays and the Long Beach Invitational.
