Sofia Richie jetted off to Paris for her bachelor party. The 24-year-old supermodel who is currently engaged to music executive Elliot Grainge took to Instagram to give her followers a peek at the fun festivities on Tuesday.

The media personality shared several snapshots of the beautiful scenery as well as her close friends and her stepsister Nicole Richie. In one of the photos, Sofia sits on the ground of a hotel room, while sipping a glass of red wine in cozy all-black attire. Her ensemble consisted of a loose-fitting short-sleeve T-shirt and baggy sweatpants. The relaxed bottoms had a yellow waistband drawstring and fitted cuffs on the hem.

Sofia added a fuzzy hot pink headband to her outfit. Staying true to a chill vibe, she styled her hair straight and simply accessorized with a silver watch.

Sofia went casual with her footwear choice, slipping into a pair of chunky sneakers. The silhouette featured black and mint green uppers and also had a rigged sole for greater traction and comfort.

Nicole matched her stepsister’s style and also sported an all-black outfit. The fashion designer and television personality wore a black overcoat with a crewneck shirt. She covered her eyes with oversized sunglasses and wore the same fuzzy hot pink headband as Sofia.

Kaley Cuoco is expecting her first baby with her boyfriend Tom Pelphrey. The “Flight Attendant” actress announced the news today on her Instagram Story, posing for a mirror selfie in ’90s style. In the picture, Pelphrey is seen with his hand on Cuoco’s baby bump.

The actress wore a white long-sleeved shirt under a black Carhartt overall, serving ’90s style while keeping it comfortable. She accessorized with a thin bracelet and small gold hoops.

As for footwear, the actress slipped into white sneakers. Cuoco wore a Nike Air Force 1. The sneaker debuted back in 1982 as the first basketball shoe to house Nike Air. The classic shoe continues to stay up-to-date with trends while also staying true to the brand’s roots.

Pelphrey opted for a more formal look with a classic white button-up and a black polka dot tie with black dress pants. The only thing that matched Cuoco’s casual look was his solid black comfy slides.

In another picture shared to her Story, Cuoco is seen in a white tank top paired with black “mom jeans”. The actress also posted photos of “mama bear” and “papa bear” coffee mugs, and confessed she had a “Subway sandwich craze that lasted for 3 days.”

The couple made their relationship Instagram official back in May. Since then, the “Ozark” star and Cuoco have been seen together on numerous occasions. They accompanied each other to the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony where the actress was wearing a custom bubblegum pink Dolce & Gabbana gown.

Cuoco has been a big fan of the luxury designer lately as she has been seen in two sparkling suits from the brand, one at “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” and the other at her newest film “Meet Cute” premiere.

“If, like me, you feel your best in colour, then forgoing it entirely (even for a week) isn’t the most exciting proposition.”

When I was nine, I went through an obnoxious phase where I wore only purple (or some variation, like lilac) for a solid year. There was one particular outfit, consisting of crocodile print flared pants, a long sleeve top with a huge sparkly flower splashed across the front and chunky slip-on sneakers – all in a shade of purple, naturally – that neatly sums up two elements of fashion I still adore; colour and eclectic prints and patterns.

But the older I become, and the busier I get, the more appealing the idea of a uniform-like aesthetic is. In the fashion industry, this is what we’d call a ‘capsule wardrobe’. A wardrobe comprised of hard-working, multi-functional items that form the backbone of your everyday outfits.

So when it came time to figure out what I’d wear to this year’s PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival, I decided to forgo the ‘fun’ element of my style and challenge myself: for the entirety of the Festival I would wear a monochromatic capsule wardrobe.

I have to admit, I was a little wary. If, like me, you feel your best in colour, then forgoing it entirely (even for a week) isn’t the most exciting proposition. But being the intrepid investigative journalist that I am – if you consider reviewing clit sucking vibrators intrepid journalism – I was up for the challenge.

When you’re going monochromatic, a key consideration to keep in mind is the quality and style of the garments. Where colour and pattern can hide all manner of sartorial sins, like an item being ill-fitting or poorly cut, when there’s nothing to look at but the garment itself, the fit and quality of it really matters. I knew I needed a brand that prioritised these elements, and thankfully capsule wardrobes are having a bit of a moment right now, something that made my search for the right one a lot easier.

Our collective interest in whittling down our wardrobes and approaching fashion in a more considered way has seen rental businesses like Rentr. launch capsule wardrobes, where you can hire a cohesive selection of pieces from brands like Scanlan Theodore and Camilla & Marc. At the higher end of spectrum is the Christina Centenera-founded label Wardrobe NYC, which offers four- and eight-piece capsule wardrobes.

After some light online shopping disguised as research, I was pleased to find that sustainably-minded Melbourne label Arnsdorf is now offering its own eight-piece capsule wardrobe. Described as “a contemporary edit of eight key Arnsdorf pieces”, the capsule is functional but sleek. I’m fond of a suit for work-related events, which the capsule includes, but what really sold me was the Claire Tee. It has a particularly interesting curved neckline, and I felt it would provide the injection of ‘fun’ I anticipated I’d be missing.

Converse is currently scouting the next generation of Australian creative talent

Your foot in the door of the creative industry.

Converse All Stars – the creative network, not the iconic shoe – has been going strong for five years now. The global community launched right here in Australia back in 2017, with the goal of bringing together creatives from a wide range of disciplines and fields. Vibrant All Star communities now exist all around the world.

Despite where your brain might jump, it’s not an ‘influencer club’. To be an All Star doesn’t require thousands of followers. You don’t need to know everyone who’s anyone in your field or have public accolades attesting to your creative brilliance.

So what do All Stars have in common? A creative spark, passion and the potential to bring on real cultural change. Over the last five years, Converse has been scouting the globe for people with these qualities, building their own Oceans 11-style crew of over 2500+ artists, musicians, athletes, writers, mould-breakers, game-changers, taste-makers and other creatives.

The best part is that for the first time, the brand is taking a new approach to finding its next crop of All Stars. Converse is holding an open call so everybody has a chance to throw their hat in the ring. There’s no doubt that joining the Converse All Stars leads to amazing opportunities. From industry mentorship and community-building events to once-in-a-lifetime trips around the world, the All Stars have done some truly enviable things.

Local All Stars include FJ contributor and content creator Maggie Zhou (who helped launch the sustainability-focused Trash Island project), graphic designer and wearable artist Paulina Zamorano (who was commissioned to create custom work for Converse’s Renew Labs concept store), Sydney-based musician Boy Soda (who opened for Dominic Fike at a Converse party in LA and was later signed to Warner Music), and multidisciplinary artist Aysha Nanai-Leifi (who recently became the first queer Samoan Maori woman to sit on a panel at Tribeca Film Festival).

The open call comes off the back of one of the most mind-blowing All Stars initiatives yet. Converse invited 30 All Stars from 12 countries to a three-day workshop led by industry leaders, where they were tasked with creating five original songs, each with an accompanying visual expression.

Collaboration was the name of the game, encouraging the All Stars to meld, reinvent and reinvigorate their own sounds and disciplines in order to create something that had never been heard before. The five resulting tracks cover everything from emo and R&B to EDM and Brazilian funk.

At the end of the workshop, the songs were presented to none other than Tyler, the Creator, who offered the gathered creatives some priceless advice and industry insight.

In attendance was Melbourne local Lydia Tesema, who’s still reeling from the opportunity to speak to and create music for such a well-respected music icon. Like many All Stars, Lydia is a true multidisciplinary creative. She’s a radio host, presenter, writer and a social justice ambassador – just to name a few.

Lydia and five other creatives worked on the song ‘Together’, a bilingual Brazilian funk-trap track that draws on themes of resourcefulness, unity and purpose.

“It was that big of an experience that I just had to sit back and take it all in,” Lydia says, reflecting on the workshop. “It was just so amazing on so many levels, and it was wonderful connecting with other creatives from around the world. I love people, I love meeting creators and I love connecting. Converse gave me the opportunity of a lifetime.”

Lydia joined the All Stars at the start of 2020, invited by Converse to attend a clothing swap event in Brunswick. She explains that the brand was attracted by her Instagram, which showcased a lot of her passion, skills and desire to express herself.

“One thing I’ll say is that Converse really sees the potential and just goes for it and tries to nurture it. Because I wasn’t doing anything special,” she explains. “I hadn’t set any real intentions about what I wanted to do in the creative space at that point. I was just someone who really wanted to pursue that space and was still figuring it out.”

She describes her first year as an All Star as heavily focused on community building and connecting with other creatives. This sense of community was particularly important when Covid took over, painstakingly maintained despite lockdowns and the inability to collaborate in person. One thing Lydia highlights is the initial cautiousness she approached these opportunities with.

“As a black woman, I’m used to seeing tokenism from companies. When I first came across Converse and All Stars, it’s not that I was sceptical, I just didn’t expect what they’ve ended up doing for us. Over time, I started to see how much they really want to hear my voice.”

In July of 2020, Lydia published a think piece on her platform Below The Surface about Black Lives Matter, which was then featured on the Converse website.“I was just like, ‘Wow!’ They’re really aligning our true voices and perspectives to their brand, and saying that this is an extension of how the community feels.”

Although the minimal ‘clean girl’ aesthetic has reigned supreme over the past five years, there’s always been a collective of fashion folk who’ve never changed their loud and proud ways. Now, with maximalism well and truly back in its moment (thanks to the return of colourful Y2K and ’80s aesthetics), maximalists are living it up.

As a styling approach, maximalism is a tough aesthetic to define – it’s something different to almost everyone. It’s usually plenty of colour, pattern, texture and variation in layering and silhouettes. As long as it’s slightly chaotic, it’s fair game to be considered maximal.

Even with a ‘more is more’ mentality, most maximalist dressers have some method to their madness. Or at the very least, they’ll have one piece they rely on time and time again, helping pull a look together when they aren’t feeling the most creative. Below, I asked some of my favourite maximalist fashion people about the items they fall back on when all else fails.

Is it cheating to say my hardest-working item is my jewellery box? I’m all about layering and stacking accessories, because you can add so many dimensions to your personality. I describe my style as ‘curated maximalism’. You don’t want to look like you’re playing dress-ups in your mum’s wardrobe, so having something that carries through the outfit helps it look cohesive.

To me, everything has a place or purpose. I always start with the same base: a smiley face ring from Grace Kelly’s Store, a Millie Savage ring I got for my birthday and a heart necklace from Hutch Melbourne that says ‘loverboy’. From there, I just keep adding different pieces until I feel like it might be too much – then I’ll add one more for good measure.

Remember the return of the corded headphones? A few years after the rise of AirPods, we all seemed to revert back to our dangly roped messes that often tangled their wires around themselves, catching on door handles, shirt buttons, and anything that could possibly render us stuck for a few moments.

I love the drama of something tied to me, blowing around in the wind as I waltz my way through the streets. It should be no surprise to anyone [that I’m partial to] sporting a patterned silk scarf. Scarf around my neck, my head, my waist – I’ll do it all! There’s just something about looking so put together but also being engulfed in fabric at the same time that is so appealing to me. I can’t really describe why. It just is!

Music has always been the root of all inspiration around my identity and in particular, my fashion sense. My fashion sense always reflects the music I’m listening to at the time. The foundation of my style is built from bright colours, baggy silhouettes, playful accessories and an absolute shit tonne of jewellery. I think my style derives from artists like Lil’ Kim, Britney Spears and Princess Nokia.

My favourite item in my wardrobe is a custom pair of one-of-one sneakers that my best friend Dom gave me on my 21st birthday. These sneakers aren’t just any normal sneakers. [They’re] hand painted by Brian Funes, representing the cover art of my favourite album, 1992 Deluxe by Princess Nokia. This album and shoe both perfectly encapsulate my style and personality, representing how music is integrated into my fashion style. [These shoes are] a very special piece to me.

I bought these during the first lockdown of 2020 and they’ve become the most worn piece I own. To me, these pants are a neutral. They’re the perfect shade of green and go with everything I own. I wear these pants weekly and my love for them has never diminished.

The On Parks Square Jacket is definitely the hardest-working item in my wardrobe. It’s Italian wool, never creases and is always ready to go. It dresses up any outfit with a bit of drama and its length is perfect for the Australian weather climate – not too heavy, goes over everything and matches all my shoes. It’s two seasons old already and I still get a buzz putting it on.

I left it in an Uber the other day and gratefully got it back a week later. It was the longest week of my life… can’t wait to get it in another colour and will definitely be taking it to Paris Fashion Week. A trans-seasonal hero!

For many people, ‘business-minded’ and ‘professional’ aren’t words they associate with sex work. Then there’s Christina Faggiano, an Australian woman capitalising on the booming rebrand of sex work pioneered by subscription-based platform OnlyFans. Christina’s selling digital content of her body to not only pay her bills, but to launch a career in a notoriously competitive industry: fashion.

What differentiates OnlyFans from other commercial content sites in the market is its simplistic model that gives creators total control over the content they produce and the prices they set. The platform also offers profile anonymity, making it especially appealing to those looking to buy and sell sexually explicit content.

The site has exploded in popularity since the pandemic began, with the platform raking in $3 billion last year. 21-year-old Christina, who lives on her own and runs two small businesses (a lingerie label Made By Christina, and a fashion styling service) is currently making enough money on OnlyFans to live off.

“Financial [security] is definitely the main reason I started OnlyFans, but going through the pandemic and having all of my priorities either put on hold or shifting, kinda gave me the time to get what I really wanted out of my life,” she tells me.

“Some weeks I earn more than others, it really depends on how much attention you’re promoting on other social media platforms… but I make a healthy wage, enough for my lifestyle. I personally feel like, with OnlyFans, it gives me the freedom to earn an income and explore those different areas that interest me. During the pandemic, I was designing, sewing and modelling lingerie and it made me feel very sexy… ”

I spoke with her about navigating life as an OnlyFans creator, and how the fashion industry is colliding with sex work to offer her some exciting new business opportunities.

What kind of content do you create on OnlyFans?

I create a mixture of photo and video content, pay-per-view and point-of-view content as well. I never put myself in positions where I feel uncomfortable via requests and I only do what makes me feel in control and sexy.

How do you navigate your love life while being an OnlyFans content creator?

I was in a relationship before I started working on OnlyFans and it was such a hard thing to bring up, and talk about with my partner. The key to it was being really open and honest about what you’re doing. It’s definitely working out what your partner feels comfortable with, just being with someone that supports you and knows that you aren’t doing it for any other reason than business.

I’m very transparent with my partner about what I’m doing on OnlyFans. He’s subscribed, he knows what’s going on. He sees everything, he loves it, you know. Sometimes in the early days, he would get on board and make some appearances as well.

He’s also a creative and runs his own businesses, and he gets it. So yeah, I guess it’s just being with someone who’s quite like-minded to you and understands. At the end of the day, it’s just very clear if I’m communicating with my clients. There’s no flirting or sneaky behaviour – it’s business.

What’s your long-term career goal?

To be a designer and continue to develop my own brand as a creative. I want to continue to run an ethical [and] transparent fashion label where I am hand-making all of my garments. My true love and passion reside within being creative [and] designing and sewing. I also want to continue to work in other areas of the fashion industry such as editorial, personal and celebrity styling.

Where and what did you study?

I studied fashion throughout high school and had the privilege of being taught and mentored by a truly magnificent woman, Vicki Hobbs, who truly fostered and nurtured my love for fashion and design. She is someone I really look up to. She taught me how to be a great designer.

I was accepted into studying at the London College of Fashion after high school, but had to, unfortunately, put that on hold due to the pandemic starting in the world; it would not have been ideal for me to go. I did, for a time, plan to go back to study, but I feel I am learning more and more on my own by running my business and sewing for pleasure. I found you can get to far [away] places when you have the love, drive and intention to.

Do you ever worry that your career goals are going to collide with your OnlyFans world?
Oh, I used to worry all the time! I think that’s why I didn’t start sooner because I was really afraid that it would hold me back from doing more ‘professional’ roles, or being in roles in the career industry that people may look down on or not approve of someone who has either been or still is a sex worker, or participating or working in OnlyFans. Honestly, I’ve had more business opportunities within the fashion industry from companies that know I do OnlyFans.

For example, I work for a lingerie brand, I’ve done some modelling for them and they’ve seen some of my designs that I’m working on at the moment for Made by Christina. I’m doing a whole new collection where I’m steering away from the more soft satin materials and I’m using faux leathers. This brand was quite interested in me getting some samples into them and start stocking them potentially. That was a very big deal for me, which is really exciting.

Do you have any advice for people interested in creating on OnlyFans?

Even if it does ‘come back to haunt you’ be proud of yourself, own it. Just be proud. If someone asks “Is that you?’ just say “Yes, that’s me!” [and] own it. Just make sure you know what you’re doing and the kind of career pathway you want to take.

I know in some industries it’s a bit controversial so always be cautious. You don’t have to advertise your own name; you change your name, and you get to know your content and your audience. I would definitely say know your boundaries and don’t be afraid to take that leap.

Melbourne label Kahe is prioritising thoughtful tailoring

“I am passionate about fits, quality fabrics and the duality of the garment.”

Eight years ago, Melbourne-based designer Kacy Heywood threw herself headfirst into a new creative endeavour; creating footwear and garments from scratch. Entirely self-taught, Kacy learnt the tricks of her trade by pulling apart discarded clothing and obsessively watching YouTube tutorials.

Had she known how difficult the process of establishing her label Kahe would be, she says she “would have never begun”. But it’s her unconventional approach to design that’s made her label successful and has helped her acquire an intimate knowledge of garment construction.

After years of blood, sweat and tears, Kacy is now able to support herself through Kahe and the Melbourne clothing store she co-founded and is the creative director of, Error 404.

Her multi-functional, exquisitely tailored designs are released in low volume amounts, and the popularity of her drops is a testament to the versatility and enduring appeal of her garments. Below, she shares her journey in establishing her label, and what’s exciting her in Australian and international fashion lately.

Tell us about you. What’s your fashion background?
I am a self-taught designer that started in footwear and then moved to garments and creative direction. My education process was through the execution of my label Kahe that I began eight years ago.

How did the label get started? Talk us through the process and the challenges.

Naivety and youth was a huge catalyst for the label! I was 25 and finally accepted myself as an individual. The realisation that I am the only one living my life really struck [me]. So I started to live by this. The desire to create garments was/is innate. I partnered with my talented friend Robyn Daly who took photos and we created an exhibition together.

Of course, we didn’t have any right of passage to a gallery, so we took a gallery’s storage room that had a roller door onto Gore Street [in] Fitzroy. We displayed Robyn’s images of my garments with my garments. Julia, who owned Melbourne’s iconic store Dagma Rousette, was walking her dog and stumbled across our humble pop-up/exhibition. She purchased a few pieces and asked me to stock with her. This was the beginning. I had no idea what I was doing!

This was in 2014. I honestly was making everything up. My patterns were made from newspapers. I taught myself by pulling apart old clothes, ironing them and drawing around that. I had no idea what grain, bias or salvage of fabric was. The next four years led to many tears and panic attacks! Stopping and starting again. Google and YouTube became my best friends and I was obsessed with teaching myself everything I needed to know to facilitate my creative outlet.

It is only these past two years that I have not needed another job. I have worked in bars or cafes full time and pretty much spent all my money on Kahe because I loved doing it so much. If you want to be a designer and don’t come from financial security, then you absolutely have to do it for the love. You are tricking yourself if you think you are going to make money. That comes later… like 10 years later.

What were you trying to achieve from the project at the time? How has this evolved and what are you trying to communicate through the brand now?

My first ever collection was called Return Investment. It was based on the idea that there is no such thing as true altruism. I also wanted to provoke thought in the consumer [to consider] why they are consuming. What is their return going to be on purchasing a Kahe piece?

As time has gone on the philosophical side has died down and the more pragmatic approach to creating a collection has strengthened. For example, I am passionate about fits, quality of fabrics and also [the] duality of the garment. This ultimately will give back more tangibly and hopefully lessen consumer waste.

How would you describe Kahe to someone who’s never seen it before?

Kahe is a predominantly womenswear label that focuses on practical beauty. Pieces are inherently inspired by the working class, using mainly suiting and denim.

The tailoring. I worked really hard to make a unique piece to flatter a body comfortably.
What do you wish you knew when you started?
I am happy [with] how everything went. If I knew how hard it was going to be I would have never begun. If I went to uni and was taught their way, I feel I wouldn’t have acquired the intimate knowledge of construction I have now.

Dion Lee and Laura and Deanna Fanning are cutting some serious international recognition at the moment and they deserve it!
What about the Australian fashion industry needs to change?

Tough question. I feel like I am such a tiny tiny part of the industry and I am not too sure if my perception of it is correct. I do think, like any industry, it is linked with social and economic issues and can be used as a platform to guide change. However, I also think Australia is a backwards and stubborn country that tends to give way to conformity.

Nonplus
For a monochrome moment, Nonplus shouldn’t be overlooked. Designers Maurice Terzini and Gareth Moody came together to create moody, androgynous looks they call ‘sea-punk’. Designed and manufactured in Sydney, Nonplus is focused on sharp tailoring and quality textiles.

Meet Emsah, the Australian label handpainting swimwear in the name of textile experimentation

“Emsah emerged from a feeling rather than an aesthetic. The urge to touch something tactile and unusual; the feeling of something visceral against your skin.”

Known for its colourful, tie-dyed swimwear, garments and bags, Australian label Emsah has an emphasis on handmade production. Its designer and founder, Emily Martin, strongly values working with her hands and manipulating fabric to create with feeling rather than aesthetics in mind.

But getting her label off the ground wasn’t easy, and she faced a myriad of challenges during the launch of Emsah, not least of all a global pandemic hitting New York hard while she was living there.

Undeterred, Emily tested and experimented with textiles in her studio and the product of these quiet months in lockdown was Emsah’s first capsule collection. Below, Emily details her creative process and how she grew her label and discovered herself in the process.

Tell us about you. What’s your fashion background?

Ultimately, I think of myself as a maker. Since I can remember, I’ve always loved creating, experimenting and working with my hands. I still get a kick out of making objects for home or pieces for myself to wear. My journey in fashion started at the University of Technology, Sydney, where I studied fashion and textile design. At the same time, I worked for many different Australian labels to get my foot in the door of the industry. After graduating starry-eyed, I moved to New York to pursue the idea of gaining more design experience.

Over the following four years, I worked for some NY-based labels before eventually becoming a buyer for Opening Ceremony, which was unexpected but rewarding to be able to discover another side of the fashion world. I was lucky to work with so many talented young emerging brands in this role, which only made my long-time aspiration to launch my own project even stronger.

How did the label get started? Talk us through the process and the challenges.

I grappled with the thought of launching a label for a long time. The moment arrived in New York when I quit my job, wanting to focus on developing my ideas full-time. Almost instantly, the city spiralled into lockdown as the world came to grips with a global pandemic. The energy and atmosphere I’d become familiar with quickly fell dormant. The first capsule collection evolved from the next few quiet months creating and experimenting in my studio with the materials that I had. As with most new projects, Emsah has come with a myriad of challenges.

My process has been very hand driven with a focus on textiles. The designs have emerged from tedious testing and experimenting. I found this to be an extremely rewarding way to develop ideas while tapping into a mode of self-expression. Being able to work this way has been a lot of fun and I want to continue creating one-off pieces. As the label grows, balancing hand-made production with time efficiency becomes more of a challenge. I currently work part-time, while making all pieces to order in my Melbourne studio.

What were you trying to achieve from the project at the time? How has this evolved and what are you trying to communicate through the brand now?

Without any specific direction, Emsah emerged from a feeling rather than an aesthetic. The urge to touch something tactile and unusual; the feeling of something visceral against your skin. I would focus on making swatches, painting and manipulating fabric to create textures and shapes. This evolved into hand-painted swimwear, garments and bags.

My aim was to spark the beginning of an ongoing project that is not limited to creating clothing but rather focused on developing anything or textile technique that is inspiring to me at that time. I am currently working on new items that continue these ideas.

How would you describe Emsah to someone who’s never seen it before?

Emsah is a world of unexpected textures and colour combinations. It is crunchy and slippery and fragile and strong. It can change a mood or make a moment.

Where did the name come from?

Emsah is a nickname my dad has called me my whole life.

What are you most proud of in your work on your label?

To have finally started Emsah as a one-person show. It has been a real process of self-discovery and I am determined to continue creating and working through my process.

I’m generally excited by the community of young local creatives that are putting themselves out there right now. There is a huge demand for locally made fashion that has a unique point of view and a growing community of designers that are steering away from traditional fashion seasons to focus on really experimenting with the things they want to see.

Right now I am very interested in glass blowing. I would love to collaborate with a local glassblowing artist to make accessories or items for Emsah.

All pieces are currently made to order via my website. I also take custom orders via Instagram. [I’ve also previously had a] limited number of handpainted swimwear, scrunchies and bags made in an exclusive colour-way for Suku Home.

Unlike clothing, there’s jewellery some of us never take off – the pieces that weather with us through life’s inevitable ups and downs. It’s the gold necklace your great-grandmother once wore, the engraved ring a friend gifted you or the vintage silver bracelet you found in the back of an unassuming op shop.

It’s the kind of jewellery made with thought, process and consideration. Believe it or not, there’s a reason why your $7 multi-pack of colourful stud earrings hasn’t held up. Well-made jewellery takes time and knowledge – almost 10 years’ worth, in the case of Melbourne jeweller, Olivia Cummings.

Olivia is the founder of Cleopatra’s Bling, the Australian label inspired by travel, stories and the cosmos. Below, Olivia shares her top tips for spotting well-made jewellery.

I hand-carve each design myself out of wax, and the pieces are individually cast. Because I work with [some of the] best craftspeople in the industry, and the integrity of the materials I use are A-grade, we’re able to ensure very long-lasting pieces. I’ve worked for 10 years on my brand to ensure the quality is the highest it can be.

What’s the difference between gold-plated and gold-filled jewellery?

Gold-filled jewellery is composed of a solid layer of gold (typically constituting at least five per cent of the item’s total weight) mechanically bonded to a base of either sterling silver or some base metal.

An equivalent to this would be micron-plated vermeil (which is what we do) which is 3 microns of 24k gold over sterling silver. Gold-plated jewellery can be done in many different ways, some more durable than others. We do micron-plated, gold-plated jewellery, which is very long-lasting… the base metal is nickel and lead-free bronze. In short, it’s about the thickness of the metal over a base metal of some sort.

What’s the difference between lab-grown and natural gemstones? Does one tend to last longer?

Lab-grown means they’re scientifically created in a lab. We use 95 per cent natural gemstones, as they lend themselves more to our aesthetic. Lab-grown stones have a very different look and feel than natural gemstones. The main distinction is natural gems typically have inclusions from the crystallization process — [from] gases and other minerals mixing during the molten stage of stone creation.

Because lab-created stones rely on a steady, controlled process of applying minerals, heat and pressure, they usually have fewer inclusions. Personally, I prefer natural gemstones as I like the texture and contours of the naturally occurring beauty.

I think weight is important. A lot of jewellery feels tinny and cheap. I want my jewellery to feel like it’s strong, with a good quality base metal (in the case of gold-plated and vermeil jewellery). The way stones are set is something I’m learning a lot about, and fast!

Certain stones that are more brittle (like emeralds) need to be set really well and intentionally, keeping in mind the nature of the stone. Clasps on chains and necklaces should be sturdy enough for beaded pieces. That said, jewellery needs to be treated with care as it’s a delicate item.

What are the other elements we should be looking out for to spot well-made pieces?

Make sure the jewellery is stamped if it’s solid gold, silver, or vermeil. It’s illegal to not stamp the base metal if it’s considered a precious or semi-precious metal. Ask questions about the stones – ask if they’re dyed or natural. Once you start paying attention to these things, it will become like second nature to you.

This also means it’s time to bust out that icon of Australian summers – a good old-fashioned pair of thongs. Havaianas is getting in the mood by collaborating with Copenhagen-based brand Rotate on a new three-piece collection, available exclusively online. The collab combines Rotate’s high-glam vibe with the laidback Brazilian spirit of Havaianas.

It’s about time that thongs moved from the beach to the streets and had a high-fashion moment in the spotlight, and pairing them with the unique style that’s synonymous with Denmark is an unexpected yet inspired twist.

The limited-edition, worldwide drop includes three styles of Havaianas’ comfort-forward classics, all inspired by the bold palette of Rotate’s Spring Summer 2022 collection. Rotate’s signature colours of hot pink and vibrant green are contrasted with a chunky black logo at the toes, perfect for pairing with more understated summer dresses to achieve a careful blend of outgoing and casual.

The collaboration is rounded out by a third pair of thongs in a dark python print, finished with green straps and yellow branding. Each pair also features Havaianas’ signature rubber sole and both brands’ logos on the straps.

Sydney label Clover Cutler is embracing ugliness with its small-run designs

“I hope Clover communicates that not everything has to be nice or tasteful to be beautiful.”

Growing up, Hetty Cutler was exposed to fashion design through her mum. But despite learning her way around a sewing machine at an early age, she pursued art before launching her label Clover Cutler.

Still in its infancy, Clover Cutler operates primarily online, offering one-off and small-run designs showcased and sold on Instagram. It’s through social media platforms like Instagram that Hetty keeps an eye on the local design scene and exciting new up-and-comers.

Clover Cutler pieces are designed to catch attention, even if the initial reaction isn’t positive. And draw you in they do, with the label offering deconstructed garments, pieces with unconventional cut-outs, imperfectly hand-dyed logos and imagery, exposed seams, and mish-mash prints.

We caught up with her to find out more about her label, what she’s learnt since launching it and which designers inspire her.

Tell us about you. What’s your fashion background?

I grew up with my mum teaching textiles at TAFE, which was super intriguing as I child. I was obsessed with the reference drawings she did for her students of all these gorgeous girls wearing her designs. I grew up always drawing and learnt to sew/embroider at a really young age because my mum is the most creative person I know – I was probably just copying her.

Apart from that, I’m relatively new to fashion. I went to the National Art School for three years, studying painting, which has definitely inspired my obsession with stencils and dye work. But I actually haven’t studied fashion yet. I’m planning on going to TAFE in 2023 to study textiles and design, which is going to be interesting, learning how to cut patterns and probably re-learn a lot of the things I’ve taught myself via YouTube.

I originally started Clover at the end of my third year at art school. My first ever pop-up was at the gallery me and my two best friends were running at the time, Pink Place. I literally can’t even look back at the pieces because it makes me cringe so hard. It has been a very slow process for me and I have let myself take it really slow because I have a habit of having obsessive interests and them burning out. Thankfully Clover has stuck with me for two years now, which is the longest I’ve shown interest in anything, so I’m so proud of myself for being persistent.

How would you describe Clover Cutler designs to someone who’s never seen them before?

I LOVE ‘ugly’ – I think most of the clothing I wear these days I either hate at first or I think it’s ugly, and then those pieces turn out to be my favourite items of clothing. I hope someone thinks that about one of my pieces. I hope Clover communicates that not everything has to be nice or tasteful to be beautiful.

Where did the name come from?

The name doesn’t necessarily have a deep meaning, but four-leaf clovers and shamrocks were Celtic charms used for protection and to ward off bad luck, and I think if we can avoid bad luck we might as well be doing it fashionably. Also something fun I found out recently is the four clover leaves stand for faith, hope, love and luck, which I thought was super sweet. And Cutler is my last name, I thought the alliteration was cute.

Probably my horse stuff at the moment, I’m just having so much fun with stencils and my knitting loom machine.

What do you wish you knew when you started?

Honestly, this is all so new to me, so I don’t really know what I could tell myself because I’ve just properly started. But maybe to stop procrastinating because it only makes your life admin disproportionally harder.

I am so, so excited about how many talented people from Australia I’m seeing on Instagram and social media, especially queer artists and creatives. Everyone is just riding their own waves and creating stunning and original works. I love this emerging knitwear scene at the moment, I feel like we are all bouncing off each other.

There’s this knitwear brand I’m obsessed with at the moment called AMC, that I have found really inspiring. We’re finally seeing more variety and diversity with these small upcoming designers and it feels like such a breath of fresh air compared to these big brands with cult followings.

What about the Australian fashion industry needs to change?

I’m just so sick of seeing big brands stealing from smaller brands, it’s so incredibly boring. And more representation of all kinds. And less trend-reliant fashion.

Dream Australian collaborators?

Ok so they aren’t an Australian brand but my dream collaboration is with Elastoplast, I’ve collected their bandaids ever since I was little because my mum used to give me boxes in my stocking every year, so I would love to make Clover Cutler bandaids.

Also, my sister had a jewellery brand called Phoebe Cutler jewellery so it would be fun to create something as sisters, that would be very full circle.

I love Gimaguas, NiiHAi hair ribbons, Uniqlo tees, chunky keychains, and the piéce de résistance: my $100 Miu Miu bag.

How can we buy one of your pieces?

I’m working on a website at the moment which will hopefully be up and running soon. But for now, all my stuff is sold via Instagram through DMs.

Known for its colourful, tie-dyed swimwear, garments and bags, Australian label Emsah has an emphasis on handmade production. Its designer and founder, Emily Martin, strongly values working with her hands and manipulating fabric to create with feeling rather than aesthetics in mind.

But getting her label off the ground wasn’t easy, and she faced a myriad of challenges during the launch of Emsah, not least of all a global pandemic hitting New York hard while she was living there.

Undeterred, Emily tested and experimented with textiles in her studio and the product of these quiet months in lockdown was Emsah’s first capsule collection. Below, Emily details her creative process and how she grew her label and discovered herself in the process.

Tell us about you. What’s your fashion background?

Ultimately, I think of myself as a maker. Since I can remember, I’ve always loved creating, experimenting and working with my hands. I still get a kick out of making objects for home or pieces for myself to wear. My journey in fashion started at the University of Technology, Sydney, where I studied fashion and textile design. At the same time, I worked for many different Australian labels to get my foot in the door of the industry. After graduating starry-eyed, I moved to New York to pursue the idea of gaining more design experience.

Over the following four years, I worked for some NY-based labels before eventually becoming a buyer for Opening Ceremony, which was unexpected but rewarding to be able to discover another side of the fashion world. I was lucky to work with so many talented young emerging brands in this role, which only made my long-time aspiration to launch my own project even stronger.

How did the label get started? Talk us through the process and the challenges.

I grappled with the thought of launching a label for a long time. The moment arrived in New York when I quit my job, wanting to focus on developing my ideas full-time. Almost instantly, the city spiralled into lockdown as the world came to grips with a global pandemic. The energy and atmosphere I’d become familiar with quickly fell dormant. The first capsule collection evolved from the next few quiet months creating and experimenting in my studio with the materials that I had. As with most new projects, Emsah has come with a myriad of challenges.

My process has been very hand driven with a focus on textiles. The designs have emerged from tedious testing and experimenting. I found this to be an extremely rewarding way to develop ideas while tapping into a mode of self-expression. Being able to work this way has been a lot of fun and I want to continue creating one-off pieces. As the label grows, balancing hand-made production with time efficiency becomes more of a challenge. I currently work part-time, while making all pieces to order in my Melbourne studio.

What were you trying to achieve from the project at the time? How has this evolved and what are you trying to communicate through the brand now?

Without any specific direction, Emsah emerged from a feeling rather than an aesthetic. The urge to touch something tactile and unusual; the feeling of something visceral against your skin. I would focus on making swatches, painting and manipulating fabric to create textures and shapes. This evolved into hand-painted swimwear, garments and bags.

My aim was to spark the beginning of an ongoing project that is not limited to creating clothing but rather focused on developing anything or textile technique that is inspiring to me at that time. I am currently working on new items that continue these ideas.

How would you describe Emsah to someone who’s never seen it before?

Emsah is a world of unexpected textures and colour combinations. It is crunchy and slippery and fragile and strong. It can change a mood or make a moment.

Where did the name come from?

Emsah is a nickname my dad has called me my whole life.

To have finally started Emsah as a one-person show. It has been a real process of self-discovery and I am determined to continue creating and working through my process.

Who do you think is most exciting in Australian fashion right now?

I’m generally excited by the community of young local creatives that are putting themselves out there right now. There is a huge demand for locally made fashion that has a unique point of view and a growing community of designers that are steering away from traditional fashion seasons to focus on really experimenting with the things they want to see.

Dream Australian collaborators?

Right now I am very interested in glass blowing. I would love to collaborate with a local glassblowing artist to make accessories or items for Emsah.

How can we buy one of your pieces?

All pieces are currently made to order via my website. I also take custom orders via Instagram. [I’ve also previously had a] limited number of handpainted swimwear, scrunchies and bags made in an exclusive colour-way for Suku Home.

Road Test: Can a matching lingerie set make me feel sexy?

Maybe, if you’re wearing it for you.

A matching bra and undie set has always been an elusive concept to me. I’ve seen them in the movies and online shopping and assume all CEOs must be wearing them. In my mind, it’s unofficial under armour, destined to make you a more organised and confident person.

Truth be told, when I first sat down to write this article, I wasn’t being entirely honest with myself. I think being in the first long-term relationship of my life, I felt that my underwear game wasn’t as ‘sexy’ or as beautiful as it could be.

I was hoping this article could give me an avenue to try on some lacy sets that would impress my partner and make me feel good about myself. Those motives feel a bit stupid now, but I’m glad it’s prompted some self-reflection.

It’s hard to separate hyper-sexualised lingerie from the notion that it should be worn by someone with a slender yet busty physique. Why? Probably because we (I was born in 1998) grew up on a diet of Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows that paraded very slim, scantily-clad models. These shows taught us there was a very unrealistic body standard to aspire to if we wanted to wear those itty-bitty g-strings and bras.

It feels like the issue with sexy lingerie has always been that it is made for men, or at least, for the male gaze. I hate that my thinking recently switched to ‘I should wear some prettier underwear for my partner’, instead of questioning what made me feel comfy and confident and hygienically healthy and all that important stuff.

We all know the Bridget Jones’ Diary scene in which Hugh Grant makes fun of Renée Zellweger’s ‘granny panties’. That one’s stayed printed on my impressionable little brain for aeons, reminding me that high-waisted cotton underwear is apparently not considered ‘hot’. It made me always think twice about what I’d wear on a night out or a date.

Luckily, in recent years, we’ve seen the dawn of the female-made lingerie and intimates era, spanning Kim Kardashian’s size-inclusive Skims and local favourites like Lé Buns bridging what’s considered ‘cute’ with what’s genuinely comfortable for the wearer. I’m glad we aren’t feeling so pressured to wear floss-like g-bangers in neon peach hues like I did when I was 18 – I just have to take a look at the back of my underwear drawer to see how far we’ve come.

My biggest disclaimer for this article is that I’m not saying we all need to wear matchy lacy sous-vêtements every day, but I have felt curious about the way their beauty could elevate my mood or make me look at my reflection in a different way. We curate outfits that match our style and make us feel good, so it makes sense that undergarments could do the same thing.

I think my limitations to previously donning a coordinated and cute set of knickers and bra are two-pronged: I haven’t felt comfortable in ‘pretty’ underwear and I don’t want to get UTIs or thrush. The comfort thing comes from feeling unsexy in underwired or padded bras because of my small-ish bosoms. I also like the tummy coverage provided by more high-waisted, flexible g-strings compared to their satin, silky or lacy counterparts.

I’ve always felt insecure about my midsection and am a strict one-piece over bikini wearer. Again, these are silly habits I’m trying to break. That yeast infection bit is because I’ve been traumatised by vaginal infections in my early 20s and learned my lessons. They were mainly caused by wearing synthetic underwear that didn’t allow ventilation and trapped bacteria in.

I religiously wear Vee Underwear nowadays, for the breathable, moisture-wicking and antibacterial properties of its organic bamboo fabrication. And to be honest, these will always be my reigning favourites for no-brainer everyday dressing. Despite those preexisting concerns, I wanted to try a ‘sexy’ set of lingerie to see how it made me feel.

Giving a lacy two-piece a whirl

To undertake this experiment, I got in touch with the Australian lingerie label Saturday the Label, who kindly sent me two sets of matching bras and undies. I chose this gorgeous Edi Bra and Thong Set (because that blue is to die for) and the monochromatic Weekend Edition Bra and Thong Set for something classic.

When the product arrived, I thought ‘Holy wow that is so stunning’ but at the same time, I couldn’t imagine myself in them. I think that my very deep and indelible body image insecurities made me question if I was the right person to be wearing them. How fucked is that? But I put them on the other day and the cobalt blue set surprised me.

I thought the meshy, unpadded bra was gorgeous in its intricate design and it felt really good on my body. Its fabrication gives that sort of ‘free’, barely-there feel of a bralette without compromising on aesthetics. The fact that the set is matching in colour and style really revolutionised my getting ready process. I took time to stop and admire myself in the lingerie before putting on the rest of my outfit, and it kickstarted a really great day of work, meetings, errands and a date night.

I also didn’t feel annoyed or awkward as the day went on. There wasn’t any weird digging-in on my top half and I suffered no wedgy woes. I just genuinely liked the way my body felt in something beautiful, as I would when selecting outer garments that speak to my personal style. While I prioritise comfort and hygiene at all costs, the unspoken power that a striking, superb and comfortable pair of bra and undies possesses is something I’m glad to have uncovered.

I think I’ll try and don a cute pair once a week. Maybe it’s on a Friday to feel extra fabulous at the end of week mark, or a rogue Monday where I’m feeling a bit ‘meh’ and need a little morale boost. As we all realised in lockdown, the things you wear each day (regardless of whether you even leave the house) have a huge impact on your mood.

I also think I’ve realised that the only person I should be thinking about when I put underwear on is myself. If I want to lounge in period undies one day, a bamboo bikini the next, and a fun silky blue pair occasionally, that’s cool. I do need to make a more conscious effort to put my own desires and comfort first. And I suggest you do the same, regardless of whether anyone else is seeing them.
