Kane scores on Bundesliga debut in Bayern victory

England captain Harry Kane scored and set up a goal on his Bundesliga debut as champions Bayern Munich recorded a thumping win at Werder Bremen.

Kane swept a low right-footed effort past home goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka from 15 yards to double Bayern's lead.

He had earlier assisted the first of Leroy Sane's two goals with a deft clip over the top inside four minutes.

Mathys Tel rounded off a comfortable victory for Thomas Tuchel's side late on.

It was a fine evening for Bayern and the club's record signing Kane, who arrived in Bavaria to great fanfare but had a disappointing start with a 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup.

Billed as the man to finally fill Robert Lewandowski's boots over a year on from the prolific Poland striker's switch to Barcelona, Kane expertly laid on the first goal for Sane.

His quick thinking sent the former Manchester City winger racing clear to roll a low effort into the bottom left corner.

A much-improved Bremen threatened after the break, but Kane dispatched the visitors' second goal of the night, collecting Alphonso Davies' precise pass before picking his spot and placing a low shot into the bottom left corner.

With Kane struggling with cramp, Bayern made several changes.

Substitute Thomas Muller teed up Sane's second goal before Kane's replacement, French teenager Tel, drove in a late fourth.

Arsenal beat Man City in Community Shield shootout

Arsenal gave their hopes of beating Manchester City to the Premier League title a psychological boost as they defeated Pep Guardiola's side on penalties to win the Community Shield.

After a largely forgettable 70 minutes in the season curtain-raiser, Cole Palmer looked to have won it for City when the substitute curled home a stunning strike.

But Leandro Trossard equalised in the 101st minute when his shot deflected into the back of the net.

That took the game to spot-kicks, where substitute Kevin de Bruyne struck the crossbar before Rodri saw his effort saved and then Fabio Vieira converted to secure the silverware for Arsenal.

Arsenal led the Premier League for 248 days last season but their challenge fell apart in the closing stages as City overtook them to claim the title as part of a Treble, along with the Champions League and FA Cup.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta admitted in the build-up to this game that the end of last season still hurt, and was clearly desperate to get one over City, who beat his side home and away last season.

Arsenal's big summer signings Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber were all handed their competitive debuts at Wembley, but it looked like it was going to be a familiar story as Havertz failed to convert two big opportunities in the first half, before Palmer's stunner put City ahead.

But Arteta's side showed impressive spirit to battle to the end and got their reward when substitute Trossard struck before keeping their cool to come out on top in the shootout.

Win the boost Arsenal needed
Few people put great stock in a Community Shield win and history tells us that it does not often lead to a Premier League title win - only once since 2011 has the winning side gone on to secure the league title.

But that will not concern Arsenal for now as they revel in a positive result after such a disappointing end to last season.

Guardiola said in the build up to this game that Arsenal's transfer business in the summer has moved them to another level, and while none of Rice, Havertz or Timber particularly excelled, there is little doubt their arrival has strengthened the core of Arteta's team.

The Gunners lost 4-1 and 3-1 in the Premier League to City last season but this was a much closer affair with Arsenal having the better chances of a cagey first half, but Havertz was twice denied from close range by Stefan Ortega.

While the pressure of a title race is nowhere near the same of a Community Shield match, it will still have been encouraging for Arteta to see his side battle back after going behind, particularly after the manner of their capitulation towards the end of last season.

Another Community Shield loss for City
This is familiar territory for City. They have now played in the last three Community Shields and lost them all, but City fans will not care if the ultimate outcome is the same as in previous campaigns - winning the Premier League.

After winning three major trophies last season, Guardiola did not need to significantly strengthen in the summer, although Mateo Kovacic - one of their two big summer signings along with Josko Gvardiol - started in this game.

He slotted in well to City's midfield and for large parts of this game they looked to have picked up from where they left off last season, controlling play and dominating possession.

Golden Boot winner Erling Haaland, who scored 52 goals in all competitions last season, had an off day in front of goal but did so when he made his debut in last year's Community Shield loss to Liverpool and both he and City went on to enjoy an exceptional campaign.

Harry Kane: Bayern Munich want decision from Tottenham on England striker by end of Friday

Bayern Munich have told Tottenham they want a decision by the end of Friday over whether they are prepared to sell England captain Harry Kane.

The German champions have reportedly made at least one offer for Kane, who Bild says has already agreed terms.

The deadline is a signal that Bayern are growing frustrated with the current situation, although it is not clear if they would then walk away from any deal if it was not met.

Tottenham have refused to comment.

Kane, 30, is Spurs' all-time top scorer but has one year left on his contract.

There has been no suggestion Kane would be willing to extend his contract, so if Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy opts to keep the England striker it would effectively be ending the club's last chance to cash in on their talisman.

Bayern officials met Levy earlier this week but no agreement was reached.

Tottenham open their Premier League campaign at Brentford on 13 August. Bayern begin their season with a German Super Cup meeting with RB Leipzig a day earlier.

The transfer window does not close until 1 September, but it is felt all sides would prefer a resolution before the new season begins.

Stuart Broad ended his glittering career by bowling England to another dramatic victory in the fifth Test against Australia to leave a memorable Ashes series level at 2-2.

Broad, in his final Test before retiring, took the last two wickets as England bowled out the tourists for 334 to win by 49 runs in front of a raucous crowd at The Oval.

Chris Woakes was immense in taking 4-50 while off-spinner Moeen Ali, battling a groin injury in the last Test of his career, picked up a crucial 3-76.

Resuming on 135-0 in pursuit of 384, Australia lost David Warner and Usman Khawaja to Woakes' morning burst, while Mark Wood accounted for Marnus Labuschagne.

The visitors were put back on course for one of their greatest run-chases by Steve Smith, who made 54, and 43 from Travis Head.

But after a rain delay of more than two hours, Woakes and Moeen were the architects of an Australian collapse of five wickets for 30 runs.

Alex Carey and Todd Murphy raised tension with a ninth-wicket stand of 35 only for Broad to produce a last moment of theatre.

Looking to change England's luck, Broad switched the bails at the non-striker's end and, next ball, bowled a beauty to have Murphy caught by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

Broad then had Carey caught behind to seal victory and, amid high emotion at a ground renowned for goodbyes, left the field arm in arm with Moeen.

England's win replicates the 2-2 draw of four years ago and preserves an unbeaten home record in Ashes series that stretches back to 2001.

Though Australia retain the urn, which they will defend down under in 2025-26, their wait for a win in this country will be up to 26 years when they next visit in 2027.

Memorable Ashes has fitting finale
This was a magnificent finale to a series for the ages, another tense affair in front of a passionate crowd with the added drama of the rain delay thrown in.

Before this summer, 25 of the 340 previous Ashes Tests had been won by three wickets or fewer, or 50 runs or fewer. This series has had four such victories.

The action on Monday was never less than compelling. Led by Woakes, England were excellent with the ball, only for old foe Smith to threaten another act of defiance.

If was after the rain delay that the match swung decisively in England's direction, with four wickets falling in as many overs. The scalp of Smith in particular sparked wild celebrations on the field and in the stands, a mixture of delight and relief.

In the end, a draw feels like a fair result at end of a wonderful battle between cricket's oldest rivals. Australia took advantage of England's mistakes to lead 2-0 before the hosts roared back. Ben Stokes' side probably would have won 3-2 had rain not ruined the end of the fourth Test.

It has been a series of countless memorable moments: Zak Crawley driving the first ball for four, Stokes' declaration on the first day of the series, the controversy around Bairstow being stumped at Lord's, the nerve-shredding conclusion to the third Test and Crawley's hundred at Old Trafford to name a few.

But the enduring image was of Broad, an Ashes warrior, first conjuring the wicket of Murphy with one of his old tricks, then sparking joyous scenes with his final delivery in Test cricket.

Broad magic after Woakes and Moeen break Aussies
Neither Woakes nor Moeen were in England's plans at the start of the summer, but have played vital roles in levelling the series.

Moeen, out of retirement, has overcome a finger injury and the groin problem to bat at number three and lead the spin attack. Woakes, balancing the side because of Stokes' inability to bowl, ends with 19 wickets from only three matches and was named player of the series.

England were flat on Sunday, yet on Monday had use of a ball that had been switched only 11 deliveries before play was ended by rain on the fourth day. With it, Woakes was a constant threat, finding devilish seam movement to spearhead the attack.

Warner poked behind for 60 and Khawaja was pinned on the crease to be lbw for 72. After Labuschagne edged Wood to the safe hands of Crawley at second slip, England had taken 3-29, only to be stalled by Smith and Head.

Woakes and Moeen were rejuvenated after the rain break. Moeen drew Head into an edge to slip, before Mitchell Marsh inside-edged on to his pad and was athletically caught by Bairstow.

In between, Woakes struck the all-important blow to have Smith edge to second slip, before Mitchell Starc fell in the same manner. When Australia captain Pat Cummins miscued Moeen into his pad and was caught by Stokes, the stage was set for Broad.

As England opted against taking the second new ball, Broad regularly beat the bat in the frustrating stand between Carey and Murphy, which evoked memories of Cummins and Nathan Lyon guiding Australia to victory in the first Test.

Just as England might have contemplated a change, Broad accounted for Murphy, resulting in a release of emotion from the crowd that had spotted the changing of the bails. When he had finished celebrating, Broad patted the bails in acknowledgement.

It seemed like he might miss out on the fairytale ending when Crawley dropped an edge off Carey, but Broad would not be denied a final moment of glory as an England cricketer.

Australia lift the urn but fail in their mission
Australia were crowned world Test champions on this ground in June and take the urn back down under, yet have failed in their stated aim of ending the long wait for a series win in this country.

They have been outplayed in the final three Tests, but for stages of the last two days at The Oval got into a position from where they could have pulled off their second-highest chase in Tests.

First through the Khawaja-Warner opening stand, then when Smith and Head were adding 95, Australia were on course.

When Smith, on 39, was dropped by leg slip Stokes, who lost control of the ball after taking it above his head then hitting his hand on his own thigh, it felt like a huge turning point.

Even after the rain, Australia had plenty of time - 47 overs in which to score the 146 runs still required - only to fall apart under the pressure applied by England's bowlers and the expectant crowd.

This result means an entire generation of Australian cricketers will go through their careers without winning a series here: Khawaja, Warner, Smith, Starc, Hazlewood and the injured Lyon are all unlikely to be back.

Australia's attempt to combat the hosts' Bazballing ways has led to a fascinating clash of styles. A 3-1 win would have been a remarkable achievement but not a fair reflection of England's dominance of the second half of the series.

Juventus are kicked out of Europa Conference League

Juventus have been kicked out of this season's Europa Conference League by Uefa and fined for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

European football's governing body has also fined Chelsea for breaching FFP rules as a result of "submitting incomplete financial information".

Uefa says the matter relates to transactions which took place between 2012 and 2019.

Juventus have been fined £17.14m, while Chelsea have been fined £8.57m.

The Italian club will only have to pay half of their fine if their financial records for the next three years comply with regulations, while Chelsea have already agreed to pay the settlement figure.

The Blues have spent around £600m on 19 new players since new owner Todd Boehly took charge of the club in May 2022, but their fine relates to a seven-year period while Roman Abramovich had control of the club.

Uefa said: "Following the club's sale in May 2022, the new ownership identified, and proactively reported to Uefa, instances of potentially incomplete financial reporting under the club's previous ownership."

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) must now notify Uefa of which club will replace Juve in the third-tier European competition. It is likely to be Fiorentina, who were beaten by West Ham in last year's final, after they finished eighth in Serie A.

The case against Juventus follows a 718,000 euro (£620,000) fine as part of a settlement agreement with Italian football authorities over a case concerning payment of player salaries.

Juventus had also been docked 10 Serie A points last season following a hearing into the club's past transfer dealings.

They were initially handed a 15-point penalty in January but Italy's highest sporting court overturned that decision in April and ordered the case to be re-examined.

They would have finished fourth and qualified for next season's Champions League had they not been sanctioned.

In response to the charge, Juventus said they accept Uefa's decision and will not be lodging an appeal.

Club president Gianluca Ferrero said: "We regret the decision of the Uefa. We do not share the interpretation that has been given of our defence, and we remain firmly convinced of the legitimacy of our actions and the validity of our arguments.

"However, we have decided not to appeal this judgment.

"Lodging an appeal, possibly to other levels of judgement, with uncertain outcomes and timing, would increase the uncertainty with respect to our eventual participation in the 2024/25 Uefa Champions League."

While they continue to argue their case, Juventus' decision not to appeal against this punishment means it should be the final blow inflicted on the club for trying to manipulate financial rules to cover huge losses and allow them to buy more players.

In addition to May's 10-point deduction, key officials, including former vice-chair Pavel Nedved and sporting director Fabio Paratici, who subsequently moved to Tottenham, were fined by FIGC.

Now Uefa has had its say.

Juventus have activated a major management overhaul since these issues surfaced. They have also signalled an intention to leave the European Super League project, which former chairman Andrea Agnelli was such a believer in.

It does mean they miss out on European football for the first time since 2011-12, although given they won the title instead that season, the first of nine in a row, they may hope it is an omen.

Jordan Henderson has confirmed he is leaving Liverpool after 12 years, before an expected move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq.

The England international also lifted the Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup during his time on Merseyside.

Henderson will link up again with ex-Liverpool captain and former team-mate Steven Gerrard, who is manager of Al-Ettifaq.

He flew out with the Liverpool squad to their training camp in Germany earlier in July, although he did not play in either of their pre-season matches after an initial offer of £12m was accepted.

The midfielder joined the Reds from Sunderland in a deal worth £20m in June 2011 and made 492 appearances for them, scoring 33 goals and registering 57 assists.

Speaking in the video filmed at Anfield, Henderson said that it was hard to leave his boyhood club more than a decade ago but "when Liverpool come knocking, you don't say no".

He added: "I can't lie, there have been hard times, really hard times. But when I look back at my career at Liverpool, it will always be the good times that I remember."

Henderson highlighted the Champions League final in Madrid in 2019 when they beat Tottenham to secure the club's sixth trophy in the competition as his "favourite night", and said there were "no words" to describe the support during the parade around the city.

He called the supporters "the best in the world" adding "there can be no doubt, there is no doubt".

Henderson did not address his move to Saudi Arabia in the video.

Fans have been posting messages of thanks to Henderson across social media following the release of the video, while Stonewall, the LGBTQ+ charity which organises the Rainbow Laces campaign, has thanked Henderson for his support.

However, Henderson has been criticised by some for the move to Saudi Arabia, including Liverpool's LGBT+ fans group Kop Out, who urged him to reconsider.

Fellow Reds midfielder Fabinho has also been linked with Saudi club Al-Ittihad, who made a £40m bid for the Brazilian on 15 July, but his move looks to be in jeopardy with negotiations continuing.

Liverpool are preparing to travel to Singapore for two pre-season fixtures, against Leicester City on 30 July and Bayern Munich on 2 August.

Many big-name players have joined the Saudi Pro League this summer, with former Reds striker Roberto Firmino and Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy signing for Al-Ahli. Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez has also agreed a £30m deal with the club.

Al-Ittihad, meanwhile, have signed former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, ex-Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante and Portuguese forward Jota from Celtic.

Al-Hilal have brought in Portugal midfielder Ruben Neves from Wolves and Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Chelsea.

"I look at a guy like Zak and his skillset is not to be a consistent cricketer," said McCullum. "He's not that type of player.

This knock, though, was an awesome demonstration of what Crawley is capable of. An innings most hoped he could play but very few believed he could. Transformed from the second coming of James Vince to a pitch-perfect impersonation of Kevin Pietersen.

The strokeplay was scintillating. Sashaying down the pitch to whip through the leg side. Drives Lewis Hamilton would be proud of. Brutally slog-sweeping the part-time off-spin of Travis Head into the stands. His running between the wickets was magnificent.

There were times when Crawley rode his luck. Then again, for a man who says Ronnie O'Sullivan is his hero, perhaps it is little surprise he has mastered the trick shot of inside-edging past his own stumps.

The worry before this day began was that England, having done the hard work with the ball, would focus on the bad weather forecast for the weekend and go too hard, too soon with the bat.

But Crawley eased through the gears like a supercar and, once he found top speed, Australia did not know where to bowl to him.

He took lunch on 26 from 46 balls. In his next 47 after the break, Crawley smashed 74 runs. He moved from 50 to 100 in 26 deliveries. A 93-ball hundred is England's second-fastest by an opener (Crawley holds the record for the fastest) and the second-fastest in Tests at Old Trafford. Only Gilbert Jessop and Ian Botham have made swifter Ashes tons for England.

Australia tried to bounce him out on his arrival and, by the time they realised their mistake, it was too late. Root was off and running, driving, dabbing and reverse-scooping. The only consolation from the mully-grubber he got from Josh Hazlewood is any uneven bounce could help England in Australia's second innings.

If Stokes and Harry Brook were ideal candidates to continue the England charge, their discretion in seeing off almost 11 overs before the close leaves them primed for the morning. Australia will have nightmares about the havoc England could wreak first thing on Friday.

This was one of England's most special Ashes days, lapped up by an Old Trafford crowd that moved through nervousness to hope, then disbelief and unbridled joy.

Spectators hung off the balconies of their hotel rooms like holiday makers around the pool in Magaluf. The viewing gallery of the Point, a building seemingly designed to resemble an enormous scart lead port, was never anything other than heaving. The sprawling temporary stand hosted a party that could have stretched all the way to Stretford.

By the end, England had manoeuvred themselves into a position from which they can level the series. If they do, it will end a winless run in Ashes Tests on this ground that dates back to 1981.

It might be that their most dangerous opponent is not men in baggy green caps, but the Manchester climate, with bad weather due on Saturday and Sunday.

Even if it does rain at the weekend, this was Crawley's day in the sun.

"I am stubborn, and I like a debate on things, so maybe Stokes is right," said Crawley. "I feel like you are only argumentative if someone is willing to have an argument with you, so maybe he's argumentative."

England spinner Moeen Ali wants to find the fan who helped him cure the cut finger that was affecting his bowling at the beginning of the Ashes series.

Moeen, 36, revealed over the weekend an NHS worker had sent him a gel made of honey that healed the wound.

He wants to write back to her, but has misplaced the original letter.

"I can't remember who it is," Moeen told BBC Sport. "If the lady sees this, please get in contact because I really want to write back to say thank you."

Moeen came out of Test retirement to play in this series after England's regular first-choice spinner Jack Leach suffered a stress fracture in his back.

In the first Test at Edgbaston, the nasty gash on his spinning finger restricted Moeen's bowling on a final day when England were beaten by two wickets.

He was left out of the second Test at Lord's but returned to play a key role in the third-Test win at Headingley.

"I got home after the Edgbaston Test and a few days later I got a letter from a lady who said her husband is a big fan of mine," Moeen explained.

"They were watching and saw the gash on my finger and thought the Medihoney would really help me. I tried it and it really healed my finger straight away.

"It's amazing that someone had written to me about this. The only thing I'm really gutted about - I put the letter on the table in my house thinking after the series I will reply, now I can't find the letter."

Moeen's return to the England team now involves batting at number three for the fourth Test at Old Trafford.

With regular number three Ollie Pope injured, England employed Harry Brook in the first-drop position for the first innings at Headingley.

In the second innings, Moeen volunteered to move up to three, allowing Brook to return to his usual number-five spot, from where he scored a match-winning 75.

Moeen, who has batted in every position from one to nine in his 66-Test career, keeps the number-three slot in Manchester.

"I saw after the first innings at Headingley how we went about it," said Moeen. "Not that we were bad or anything, I just thought Brooky's value at five and Jonny Bairstow at seven would be better for the team.

"I thought 'why not?' I've batted three before. I'm past the stage where it's about me, averages or anything like that. I've always been a player where I do what I feel like is best for the team."

Moeen also said it is "likely" his Test comeback will only last for this series, rather than being tempted to be part of the tour of India early next year.

If Old Trafford and the final match of the series at The Oval are Moeen's final two Tests, he is targeting a fitting finale with two wins that would give England a 3-2 triumph and a first Ashes series victory since 2015.

"It would be amazing," he said. "I came back to try to win the Ashes.

India: 'I have been rejected by dozens of men over dowry'

Dowries have been illegal in India since 1961, but the bride's family is still expected to gift cash, clothes and jewellery to the groom's family.

Now, a 27-year-old teacher in the central city of Bhopal has started a petition asking the police to deploy officers at marriage venues and conduct raids to put an end to this "social evil".

Gunjan Tiwari (not her real name) tells the BBC her petition is rooted in her own experiences of being rejected by dozens of men over dowry.

The most recent incident took place in February when her father had invited a young man and his family to their home in the hope of finding a match for her.

After her parents had exchanged pleasantries with the guests, Gunjan walked into the living room, carrying a tray with cups of steaming hot tea and snacks for the guests.

She describes the moment as "unnerving".

"Everyone is staring at you, they are all sizing you up," she told me on the phone from her home.

A lot of meticulous planning had gone into when and how Gunjan will appear before the guests. Her mother had chosen a green outfit for her because she thought her daughter looked especially fetching in it. She also advised Gunjan not to laugh as it would draw attention to her uneven teeth.

It's a drill Gunjan is all too familiar with - having done them six times in as many years. The questions they asked her were also familiar - about her education and work, and whether she could cook.

Before entering the room, she had heard her parents ask the prospective groom's father how much dowry he expected. "We had heard that they wanted 5m to 6m rupees ($61,000 - $73,000; £48,100 - £57,000). When my father asked him, he joked that 'if your daughter is beautiful, we'll give you a discount'," she says.

As the conversation progressed, Gunjan says she figured a discount was not going to be offered - the visitors asked her about her uneven teeth and the mole on her forehead.

After tea, when Gunjan was given a few minutes to talk to the prospective groom privately, she told him that she would not marry for dowry.

"He agreed that it was a social evil," she told me, adding that it made her think that he was different from the others she had met so far.

But the Tiwaris soon learnt that Gunjan had been rejected.

"My mother blamed it on my anti-dowry stance. She was furious with me and didn't speak to me for more than two weeks," she says.

In the past six years, Gunjan says her father has contacted "families of 100-150 eligible bachelors" and met more than two dozens of them. Gunjan herself has been presented before six of them. Almost all of them, she says, have fallen through over dowry.

"Because of these rejections I have lost all my confidence," says Gunjan, who has a Masters' degree in mathematics and takes online classes.

"When I think rationally, I know it's not I who is lacking something, the problem is with people who want dowries. But I often feel like I have become a liability for my parents."

Despite dowries - both giving and accepting - being illegal for more than 60 years, 90% of Indian marriages involve them - according to a recent study. Payments between 1950 and 1999 amounted to a quarter of a trillion dollars.

Parents of girls are known to take out huge loans or even sell their land and house to meet dowry demands and even that doesn't necessarily ensure a happy life for a bride.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 35,493 brides were killed in India between 2017 and 2022 - an average of 20 women a day - for bringing in insufficient dowry.

Campaigners say dowry is also one of the reasons behind India's skewed gender ratio - the UN estimates that nearly 400,000 female foetuses are aborted every year using pre-natal sex screening tests by families worried that daughters would cost them dowries.

In her petition addressed to Harinarayan Chari Mishra, the police chief of Bhopal, Gunjan says that the only solution is raiding wedding venues and arresting those found giving or receiving dowry. The "fear of punishment" will help "put a stop to this cruel practice," she adds. Last week, she met Mr Mishra to request his help in her fight.

"Dowry is a social evil and we are committed to ending it. I have directed all police stations to give proper help to any woman who approaches them," Mr Mishra told me.

But, he says, that "police have their limitations, they can't be present everywhere and we need to raise more awareness on the subject, to change mindsets".

Women's rights activist Kavita Srivastava says police can definitely help, but tackling dowry is a complex issue.

"India is not a police state, but there's a dowry prohibition act and we need a better implementation of the law."

Dowry, she says, is often not a one-off payment for greedy families of grooms who keep demanding more and more even after marriage because "it's easy money, a conduit to get rich quick".

Ms Srivastava cites examples of women who face lifelong domestic violence and are even thrown out of their matrimonial homes for not fulfilling their recurring demands.

The scourge of dowry, she says, can only be fought if young men and women start taking a stand and refuse to give or accept dowries.

Gunjan says she would like to get married because "life's long and I can't spend it alone", but she is certain that she will not pay a dowry.

But with the clock ticking away, her family's desperation to find a match for her keeps growing.

"Among my relatives in my ancestral village in Etawah district in the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh, a 25-year-old is considered an old woman in the marriage market."

So her father regularly scours the matrimonial columns of newspapers and has sounded out relatives to keep their eyes and ears open and let him know if they spot a suitable match. He has joined a WhatsApp group with more than 2,000 members of his caste where families such as theirs share resumes of their children.

"Most want a lavish wedding which would cost 5m rupees or more. My father can only afford half of that," she says, adding that her insistence that she would marry without dowry has made her parents' life more difficult.

"My father says it's been only six years since he started looking for a groom for me. Without dowry, he says, he won't be able to find me a match even if he looked for 60 years."

Dressed in an all-white suit, sitting next to his father in a room full of hope and anxiety, basketball player Len Bias had been waiting for this moment his whole young life.

At the NBA draft of 1986, Bias was 22 years old. He was 6ft 8in and weighed 15st (95kg). Pundits had already labelled him the best prospect around - better even than 1984's third pick, Michael Jordan.

Bias duly went high and early. His name was called out second. The Boston Celtics, who had just won a second NBA Championship in three years but secured an early pick via a deal with the Seattle Sonics two years earlier, added him to their roster.

The green Celtics cap thrust into his hand represented ambition and expectation for a side built around ageing champions.

As wild cheers rung out, he hugged his dad before striding up on stage to shake NBA commissioner David Stern's hand, cameras trained on his every move.

Grainy film shows a glimpse of how Bias had built his reputation to this point. He had already mastered a silky-smooth jump shot other players spend years crafting. He was explosive, athletic, destined for superstardom - it should have been just the start of the showreel.

Instead, short clips are all we have. Two days after being drafted to the Celtics, Bias died from a cocaine overdose.

His death shook basketball, but the reverberations went far further, touching America's street corners, courtrooms and highest offices for years after.

Bias drifts wide, unnoticed by the defence, and calls for the ball. His team-mate Jeff Adkins spots him and floats the ball towards the rim. One of North Carolina's finest, Brad Daugherty, a future NBA all-star, is under it. But Bias, still a freshman, is too strong, too explosive. Bias soars above Daugherty, seizes the ball and buries it through the hoop in a single, smooth movement.

The Washington Post journalist watching in the stands described Bias "defying physics by hanging in the air for about three seconds, and unleashing a 20-megaton dunk that sent the overflow crowd rocking in ecstasy".

It is perhaps the most memorable moment from Bias' most memorable game. It came in February 1983, when Bias, playing for University of Maryland, took on the University of North Carolina and their own phenomenon, Jordan.

Despite being a 19-year-old in his first year on the team, Bias struck the more impressive figure, bigger and more athletic than Jordan, and a potentially more dominant force on the court.

Jordan was already a certified star. He had landed the game-winning shot when North Carolina snatched a thrilling national title win the previous year. Bias, on the other hand, was just a freshman. But, as Maryland secured a 106-94 win, it was clear Bias was going to bring Jordan trouble.

As the era of Larry Bird versus Magic Johnson was drawing to a close, could this be the next rivalry for a new generation of basketball fans? Little did spectators know that Jordan and Bias would never get the chance to renew their rivalry on the professional stage.

Leonard Kevin Bias was born on 18 November 1963 in Landover, Maryland, a small town on the outskirts of Washington DC. He was one of four siblings who all attended the same elementary school, theatre school and high school.

"He loved creativity and could see the beauty in things that most people couldn't," Bias' mother, Dr Lonise Bias tells BBC Sport.

"When he was in college, he loved interior design. He had that eye for putting things together and he was always meticulous about his appearance.

"He was the type of person who strived for perfection - he didn't like stuff halfway. He liked order. As he was developing, he was able to discover the hidden abilities within him."

You can see the creativity when you watch him on the court; inventive methods of getting the ball into the bucket, whether that was an assist to a team-mate through the legs of an opposing player, or shifting his body in awkward positions when flying to the rim. You could see Bias' creativity spilling out on the court.

Bias had a growth spurt around the age of 13. Dr Bias says it was as if he had "grown a foot overnight".

Playing on the junior high school team, he was known as 'the human eraser' because of the way he would block shots.

He had college offers from across the United States, but opted for Maryland to stay close to his home and family.

As a freshman, Bias lacked discipline, relying on his natural talent and balletic agility that had fellow students compare him to Muhammad Ali.

"You couldn't talk to Lenny in his freshman year," team-mate Ben Coleman said in 1984. "Criticism or advice would go in one ear and out the other.

"But that's changed as he's gotten older," Coleman continued. "Len is going to be a helluva ballplayer."

Coleman's prediction and Bias' potential was realised. During his four years at Maryland, Bias scored a mountainous 2,149 points, a school record at the time, and twice earned All-American honours, recognising the best young players in the country.

"He had a sweet jump shot," says team-mate Keith Gatlin, who arrived at Maryland a year after Bias.

"He jumped so high when he left the air people would try to get to his elbow, but couldn't because he was such a freak of nature.

"People were just in awe when they saw him because he was just a down-home, regular guy. But his talent was enormous.

"He didn't know where he was going to go, but he was just excited to play and make basketball his profession."

Gatlin saw Bias a couple of days before he set off for New York to attend the 1986 draft at Madison Square Gardens. Both men were overwhelmed by the idea that Bias was officially going to become an NBA player.

Joining the Celtics was a dream. A team flooded with talent: Larry Bird, Danny Ainge, Kevin McHale to name a few.

"They're a good team," Bias said in an interview immediately after he was picked. "I can go there and sit on the bench. Whether I play or not, I'm going to learn a lot from the players there."

When Bias and his father made it back home to Landover, Maryland, he was met with overwhelmed hugs from family members. But his mother was not at home - she was at a work meeting.

Bias decided he would head back to his university campus to celebrate. Gatlin bumped into him as he entered the dorms.

"He was excited and really, really blessed," Gatlin says. "He just smiled at the fact now he could do something that he's been doing all his life, but get paid for it.

"He said 'Look, I'll see you in the morning. I'm going to get ready to see my mom and dad then I'm going to go visit a girl who I haven't seen in a while, so I'll see you in the morning and we'll get some breakfast.'"

Bias did not go to see his mom and dad or visit the girl he had not seen for a while. Instead he decided to meet up with some other friends and make a quick trip to the liquor store. They bought a six pack of beer and a bottle of cognac and headed back to the dorm room next to Gatlin's.

One of the group was Brian Tribble. Although Tribble had dropped out of the University of Maryland, he still hung around campus and had bonded with Bias over a shared love of basketball and music.

It is unknown whether that night was the first time Bias had tried cocaine. Certainly, many of those closest to him had no inkling.

Just before the 1986 draft his Maryland coach, Lefty Driesell, was asked what Bias was like off the court.

"All I can tell you," replied Driesell, "is that Leonard's only vice is ice cream."

Gatlin was similarly unaware of any drug use.

"I've been out with Lenny many, many times and the thing that hurts me the most is that I never saw him touch drugs before. Never," says Gatlin.

"So, to 'know' him and then to see what happened was something that I've never been able to wrap my head around. I don't think I ever will because I never saw that side of him."

Bias consumed alcohol and cocaine deep into the night, before he decided to lie down. The other three in the room thought he had passed out from partying. A couple of minutes later he started violently twitching.

Bias was having a seizure.

The 911 call was made by Tribble at 6:31am, distraught with fear and disbelief.

"This is Len Bias. You have to get him back to life. There's no way he can die," Tribble, himself heavily under the influence, said to the emergency operator.

"It doesn't matter what his name is," the operator replied as Tribble repeatedly brought up Bias' name.

Gatlin, in the dorm next door, was woken shortly after by the phone.

"My mother called and said that she'd had a dream, and something was wrong," he says.

"I said 'Wow, well I'm glad you called me, I have a math class at 8am.' She said 'Are you sure everything is OK?' I said 'Yeah, I'm going to double check on my sister too.'

"When I went into the corridor to call my sister, I looked into the other room and saw my team-mates. I saw Lenny on the floor and that's when I knew something had gone wrong.

"I just spoke with this person last night, and now I look down and I see him on the floor. I don't wish on anybody what I saw right there.

"I just froze. I called his mother, woke her up and told her the wrong hospital he was being taken to because I was frantic. I woke up the rest of our team-mates and we followed the ambulance to the hospital."

By the time his mother and father could make it to the correct hospital, Bias had already been pronounced dead.

"I did not know who Len was," says his mother Lonise.

"I knew that he played basketball, that he was my son, and he was doing well. I didn't know who he was as a man.

"It wasn't until he died that I found out who he was.

"People around the world were grieving over the loss of this man and this was just my son that I love. I didn't know the level of popularity he had until he passed.

"We received flowers from the president and other personal cards from the vice president of the country, from the Senate leaders, Michael Jordan sent flowers, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson's mother called."

Maryland's chief medical examiner attributed Bias' death directly to cocaine. He said it had "interrupted the normal electrical control of his heartbeat, resulting in the sudden onset of seizures and cardiac arrest".

Tribble was put on trial on charges of supplying the cocaine that night, but was found not guilty.

"I love Lenny Bias," he said outside the courtroom. "I always have, always will."

In 1990, three years later, Tribble would be convicted for 10 years for large-scale cocaine dealing.

Tribble's conviction was just one of millions in the wider 'War on Drugs' that dominated the policies of successive US governments.

Bias' death, at his physical peak, with a future laid out before him, was part of the justification for harsher sentences for smaller amounts of certain drugs.

"Len Bias, he was the man - he was going to be the next superstar," says historian David Farber, author of War on Drugs: A History.

"I grew up in Chicago, I grew up with Michael Jordan, but there were people saying 'he's going to take Jordan'. There was fear about Bias going to the Celtics, he was that good.

"The speaker of the House of Representatives at the time of his death was Tip O'Neill, who could see there was a mid-term election coming up in November 1986.

"He understood a whole lot of people were terrified that this superstar athlete, this extraordinary fit young man had fallen prey to a cocaine overdose. O'Neill represented Boston, was a Celtics fan. It was really good politics for him to pay attention to the specificity of Len Bias' death."

O'Neill, a Democrat, realised his party could not afford to be seen as weak on an issue that was seeping into the psyche of American voters.

"Time magazine and Newsweek were outlets that middle-class Americans would read at the time. They had massive circulations at this point and had begun to pump crack as the new American nightmare," says Farber.

"Crack was not something whites, the middle class and suburban youths were using either. But it was a great 'what if?'.

"Bias didn't use crack, he died of a powdered cocaine overdose, but that's not what people perceived at the time."

O'Neill was the driving force behind the Anti-Drug Abuse Act that became more draconian the more it was discussed.

"This bill started to become a bidding war around who could punish drug dealers and drug users more," explains Farber.

"Usually you negotiate - Labour and Capital, they find a way to fight and compromise.

"But on this there was no negotiation, it was like, 'Let's put them away for five years? No, let's put them away for 10 years! Let's reduce the amount of crack that puts you in jail from 100g to 50g! Actually, how about 10g?'

"Len Bias was in the centre of all of this. Here's this superhero who becomes an emblem of what drug abuse can do to the best of us."

In October 1986, a little over four months on from Bias' death, President Ronald Reagan signed the Anti-Drug Abuse Act into law in the White House's East Room.

The act specified amounts of certain drugs that would trigger a prosecution for possession. For crack cocaine, the level was set at 5g. For powdered cocaine - the more expensive drug that had killed Bias - it was set at 500g. The minimum sentence for a conviction in either case was five years without parole.

It also set a minimum 20-year sentence for anyone convicted of dealing drugs that caused death or serious injury.

"This legislation is not intended as a means of filling our jails with drug users," Reagan told the press.

But its effect was exactly that.

"It just started to take young people and throwing them into prison in massive numbers," says Farber.

"Poor communities - in particular poor black communities - were hit really hard. Crack was a drug that was tailor-made for poor people because it was cheap, it created a really strong and immediate high, and it was reproducible again and again.

"In the United States, we talk about a carceral state, a state built around putting people in prison and that starts with the crack-cocaine hysteria."

Bias' death prompted two questions. One has been a source of fascination to basketball fans: what if he had a chance to play in the NBA? The second spread fear throughout America: what if this happens to our children?

Len's mother, Lonise, would be entitled to more.

Less than five years after the loss of Len, his younger brother Jay was killed in a drive-by shooting.

However, she has found meaning amid the starkest adversity.

"My strength has been my faith," she says.

"The heartache of losing a child is a hundred times worse than a parent can imagine. My belief system and my faith in Jesus Christ is how I have made it.

"For me, Len and Jay were two seeds that went down into the ground to bring forth life. They weren't buried, they were planted, to bring new information and insight to another generation and encouragement to those that need it."

Dr Bias now speaks around the world about healing, self-discovery and the power of community.

And when she thinks the last time she saw Len in person and in life - the day before he travelled to New York for the draft - she remembers only his enthusiasm.

"He was excited, excited, excited," she says.

Excited for a future cut so cruelly short.

Netflix show on colliding worlds of crime and media

The sensational murder of India's best known crime reporter in June 2011 and the subsequent arrest of a female crime journalist on allegations of being involved in the murder had stunned the country.

Jyotirmoy Dey, popularly known as J Dey, was shot dead in Mumbai by men on motorcycles on orders from one of India's most notorious gangsters, Chhota Rajan - he was convicted in 2018 and is serving a life sentence for the killing.

But somehow, Jigna Vora, a newspaper journalist, got caught up in the storm and was charged - falsely - for involvement in the murder.

She spent over nine months in Byculla jail before being released on bail. A single parent to a 10-year-old boy, Ms Vora was acquitted in 2018 since the police failed to produce any evidence against her.

This story of a journalist's murder - and of another's wrongful confinement - is the subject of Scoop, a new webseries on Netflix that is wowing critics and viewers alike.

Based on Ms Vora's 2019 memoir - Behind The Bars In Byculla: My Days in Prison - Scoop is a gripping tale of a real-life crime, Mumbai's mafia and the role of the police and the press. Many of the real-life incidents have been replicated, but Ms Vora says "the series makers have exercised cinematic leverage".

As Ms Vora's screen avatar Jagruti Pathak, who lives by chasing scoops that would get her a byline on the front page, ends up in a prison cell with those she once reported on, she also begins to reflect on her life and priorities.

Ms Vora told the BBC that she's pleased with the way the series has turned out but watching it was difficult.

"It was like revisiting the whole trauma. It was difficult to see on screen what I went through, the humiliation and character assassination I faced. But I'm happy that the series got made because people needed to see the truth that I was not guilty.

A few months after J Dey's murder, rumours started swirling around that a female crime reporter was involved in the murder. Some of it was reported in the media, attributed to police sources.

"We were also wondering who it could be? It didn't even cross my mind that it could be me," she told me.

In October-end when one newspaper carried a report naming her, she says her first reaction was of shock. She then knew that her arrest was imminent - and she was arrested on 25 November.

"It was a very tough period for me, I was scared, I even thought of committing suicide, but my family inspired me to fight. They told me that if I killed myself, then people would think that I was guilty. If I wanted to clear my name, I had to fight."

J Dey's murder, Ms Vora says, changed her life forever. The police said she was involved with the underworld and had helped the murderers by providing them information about J Dey. She was charged under the draconian Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (Mcoca) - a law that carries the death penalty in serious cases.

Some in the Mumbai press went after her, with many of her former colleagues taking a vicarious pleasure in her downfall. She was dubbed a murderer, a gangster's moll. They carried unverified stories, often attributed to "sources in the police", and criticised her for being "too ambitious".

"I think there's nothing wrong with being ambitious," she tells me. "But in my case it was used to portray me as a villain."

What hurt most, Ms Vohra says, was "when female colleagues and editors made disparaging remarks about me, saying that I was sleeping around with people to get stories, but I had no-one to tell my side of the story to".

The series captures the media circus as reporters hound her family, including her son. The child looks bewildered and terrified as TV cameras are thrust in his face, asking him about the alleged crimes of his mother.

Prison was "a very difficult phase of life, I think it would have been for anyone in my position", Ms Vora says. But the prison inmates, she adds, were very helpful and tried to cheer her up.

"The prison officials also treated me well, they'd counsel me telling me to take each day as it comes and that everything will be alright."

Ms Vora, who was cleared of all charges by the trial court and then the high court, says she has "no idea who fixed me".

"The only thing I know is that it happened - and I accept it as my karma. Now even if I do find out who fixed me, would I be able to change anything?" she asks.

While in jail, she says, she did a lot of soul searching and after being released on bail, she "started the process of healing myself".

"I started meditating and once out, I visited lots of temples and all that helped me gain my inner strength. I was always a believer, and now my faith in God increased."

Since it dropped on Netflix in early June, Scoop remains among the most popular shows in India - weeks after its release, it remains at number two in the list of top 10. It has also wowed critics who have described it as "a gripping tale of the fourth estate" and "a must watch for all journalists".

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta who directed Scoop says he had followed Ms Vora's case in 2011.

"But like all headlines, her story was replaced by some other headline. While it got confined to inside pages, she and her family bore the trauma of being labelled without judicial process,

In 2020, when Ms Vora's book was shared with him, he says he saw "the potential to engage with the audiences on a story that is both a cautionary tale and an important chronicle of our times".

Ms Vora says when she heard that Mr Mehta was going to be the director, "I knew that he would be able to do justice to my story". But, she says, she didn't expect this kind of response.

"People are sending me messages of love and respect on social media, they're telling me that this series has helped them see the truth, many are saying that I'm very strong - but what choice did I have?" she asks.

A tenacious reporter, Ms Vora had carved out a name for herself in crime journalism in just a few years, but after her stint in jail, she never returned to journalism. Today, she makes a living as a healer, working as an astrologer and a life coach.

The media trial that she faced more than a decade back - and the ones that take place every night in television studios where reputations are destroyed based on speculation and unsubstantiated allegations - make her uncomfortable.

Her story, she says, should serve as a lesson for the press to be careful because their reporting can destroy lives.

"The press is called the fourth estate - they are very powerful, they can make or break a person. I hope they understand the seriousness of the job that they do and mend their ways.

Russia: Wagner mutiny shows real cracks in Putin authority

An attempted armed mutiny in Russia shows "real cracks" in President Vladimir Putin's authority, America's top diplomat Antony Blinken has said.

He told US media Saturday's rebellion by Yevgeny Prigozhin's Wagner fighters was a "direct challenge" to Mr Putin, forcing him into an amnesty agreement.

The deal halted Wagner's march on Moscow. The mercenaries had earlier seized two major Russian cities.

Mr Putin accused the group of treason, but all charges were later dropped.

Under the deal, Wagner fighters must return to their field bases and Prigozhin move to Russia's western neighbour Belarus, whose leader Alexander Lukashenko was involved in the negotiations.

The current whereabouts of Prigozhin, a former Putin loyalist, are unknown. He was last seen in public leaving Rostov-on-Don - one of the two southern cities where his fighters had taken control of military facilities.

Prigozhin's press service said he would answer questions from the media "when he has normal communication means", Russia's RTVI news website reported on Sunday afternoon. It provided no further details.

Meanwhile, President Putin has not been seen in public since his nationwide TV address on Saturday morning to condemn the mutiny.

On Sunday, Mr Blinken told CBS, the BBC's US news partner, that the 24-hour rebellion in Russia "raises profound questions, it shows real cracks".

Mr Blinken, who also appeared on several other US talks shows, said it was "too early" to predict what impact the mutiny could have on the Kremlin or on Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine launched in February 2022.

"If you put this in context 16 months ago, Putin was on the doorstep of Kyiv in Ukraine, looking to take the city in a matter of days, erase the country from the map," Mr Blinken told ABC.

"Now, he's had to defend Moscow, Russia's capital, against a mercenary of his own making."

The US diplomat added that he did not want to "speculate" on where this all could lead Russia and President Putin personally.

Russia has not publicly commented on Mr Blinken's remarks.

The BBC's Russia editor in Moscow Steve Rosenberg says President Putin does not emerge from Saturday's events looking particularly strong.
